Description Don't laugh. Screw "Nightmare on Elm Street", "Friday the 13th", "Haloween" or "The Omen"; to me this is the scariest movie I ever saw. Yeah it's a silent movie but that doesn't mean it's not effective in being scary. In an age where horror films use scary sounds to scare you, this movie has no sound with the exception of the music and even that's scary, it works so well with what's being shown on the screen. The film also has this eerie and dark presense that never lets up even when the movie's over and the actor playing the vampire is so scary that you completely forget he's just an actor. so yeah, that's my thoughts of it, enjoy the poster...

Ya gotta admit, they don't make vampires like they use to anymore.  THIS is the way they are suppose to be.  Monsters!  Ones that were made to give people nightmares and be afraid of walking in the dark.  One look at their horrible face and you turn to stone with fear.

Pft!  Nowadays, vampires are loveable sex machines whom girls fantasize about and put posters of them half naked all over their walls.  Oh, and they sparkle!  They are just the most gorgeous guys around!

. . . . seriously?

Because of that, my motto suddenly became "Vampires suck!!"

Will someone PLEASE bring back the vampires that were scary?  Please do it for the sake of Max Shreck and Bela Lugosi.  The masters of all vampires!

Well, there was a vampire romance film that served to mock the public's general interest in the subject by making the vampires in question less than sexy and more tired and weary of the world around them.
It came out to DVD this year too.

Silent horror movies are badass... Like 'The Phantom of the Opera,' the Lon Chaney version. owo THAT'S what I call disfiguration! ... Not that I don't LOVE Michael Crawford's celestial voice... *swoon* Or Gerard Butler's scrumptious ass in those tight, tight Don Juan pants...

This movie is ancient. Older than old. And yet it's still quite interesting to look back on today. Because even for a silent film, it still holds up. And who could forget Max Schreck's performance as the buck-toothed vampire Count Orlok? It's to my understanding that this movie came out almost a whole decade before the 1931 Dracula film starring Bela Lugosi.

it's also far more artistic and doesn't require ridiculous dialogue.

The film is about a man who controls a somnibulist (sleepwalker) to kill his enemies.

It's an hour and a half. if you're open-minded and patient with silent films (namely German Expressionism) then you're in for a treat.

I watched it for the first time the other night. Loved it it does scare you enough to give you the "Too scarred to go to the bathroom up stairs" feeling. I love the sets especially. Theres just something charming about the old horror movies like that.

yes, it's the lack of sound effects that makes it work; it really takes it's time to set up atmosphere to send chills down your spine; most horror films these days don't do that...

Even the original Phantom of the Opera (silent too) was a classic.

There have been records of people fainting during the unmasking scene because of Lon Chaney's makeup procedure

I love both films, but Nosferatu is the scariest movie I ever saw in my opinion.

Records did show that people who saw the film screamed at the unmasking scene; even if people went and saw it again they still shrieked like banshees.

damn straight it is. but they couldn't acquire the rights to Dracula from Bram Stoker's widow so they made their own version that follows the story and holy crap, it's creepy...
here's a vid with some people's thoughts on the film and they are so true on what they're saying:

I highly reccomend it it if you like to be scared, and if you ever get the chance see a movie called "Shadow of the Vampire" it's a sort of ficticous story of the director making Nosferatu and he hires a an actor who literally is a vampire but everyone believes that he's just really into his character...

yeah, these days the only way people get scared is by seeing people getting chopped up into pieces or doing horrid things to people that would make the audience squirm, the prime example of this is the "Saw" series, a seires that seriously should've stopped after Saw III...

Digimontamer13 In reply to Volts48 [2009-05-13 01:11:49 +0000 UTC]
