it's actually rather annoying, because everyone has the ability to have a camera, and once they've got it, they think they're great.
sadly, not every one is great, because they do not like to hear those with experience try to help them, so they just prance around with their cameras. i once told a guy in one of my classes that my favorite art form is photography, and he said "oh, you're just like every other girl" and i was like NO. and then i showed him my DA site

Some of my friend same like yours too 
And I have a friend that own a DSLR (that huge camera with cool feature). Even he had that kind of high quality camera, but he don't even know that the camera has it own Megapixel. I simply ask him how much the pixel was and he said there is no pixel for this , it count with dimension (he means something like 3000x2000 of a picture). It's was Nikon D60. I know it was around 10 megapixel and I simply ask him and he gave those answer. How disappointed. And he keep shooting like a pro but he don't even know about the important thing of the camera like ISO, aperture, shutter speed and so on.
I lend the camera from him and I checked. He set his ISO to 1600 or 2000. After I saw it , I was like "WTF" . ISO for too high will not produce high quality image as we know, may be not him.

oh wow. i'm a canon girl, but one of my good friends has the d60. i wouldn't use it for video, but man it takes some lovely photos.
my boyfriend's sister is like your friend. i forget what camera she got for christmas, but its sort of in between the canon g10 and a regular dslr. she knows nothing about photography, but claims that it's basically her passion. she doesn't use the viewfinder, and i guarantee she doesn't know how to match up shutter speeds and aperatures. it is indeed disappointing, because every one in her family thinks all her shots are great, but aside from not knowing how to properly work a camera, she also has no experience with composition, framing, and so on and so on.
people like your friend and my boyfriend's sister should give their cameras to people who want to use them to their maximum.
