Description Teehee~ My cape disappeared~

Here's my most recent cosplay as Ven from Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. It's not quite done yet, but I rushed it so I could wear it at AnimeCentral.

The keyblade's janky, I'm missing the gold and red chunk of the undersuit, the helmet's a little off, and the anklets don't connect to the shoes.

Otherwise, I think it came out quite nicely.

Made from foam, Wonderflex, window tint, yards o' discount fabric, blood, sweat, and tears~

Costume made and worn by *vivid-anxiety

I actually pieced it together from many screen caps of the secret ending. I don't have the pictures on me right now. Sorry. I'm sure you'll be able to find some if you Google it. C:

Would you mind telling me how you went about making the armor? Like maybe step by step if you can
I'm stuck at making Ven's and Terra's cuz I don't know where to start.

I took some WIP pictures. Hopefully they'll help. There's some quick sketches of the shapes I used.

[link]

I cut thin pieces of foam in the shapes I drew in the corner and scotch taped or stapled the pieces together. If I didn't quite understand a piece, I'd do it in paper first and add or subtract before tracing onto foam.

I did a rough model of the entire thing in paper first before working with the foam.

The blue version was my first go at it. That got destroyed when I was hardening it, so I had to make a different one. The pieces are all still the same though, except I used a different method for the top that worked better with the material I was using to go over it. Both would work though.

Mmmm ok
oh the link doesn't work
how did you attache the armor to the clothing and layered the armor too?
Thats my main problem.
Gosh i just love your cosplay~

Thanks. :3

Here's the link: it's just the foam base of the helmet. [link]

For attaching the armor to the clothing, I used elastic bands that would go under the suit and around my legs/torso/wherever the piece is.

I'm not quite sure how to explain layering the armor besides making the pieces in the right shape and securing them on top of each other.

Sorry I'm not that good at explaining the process.

For the visor what kind is it and where did you get one that is really wide?

ReiKainaric [2010-09-23 06:50:45 +0000 UTC]

What kind of shoe did you use and was the helmet made from scratch and made with what?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vivid-anxiety In reply to ReiKainaric [2010-09-23 16:09:31 +0000 UTC]

The soles of the shoes are a pair of cheap flip flops. The rest of it was made from WonderFlex, which is plastic that's moldable when heated. The helmet is made from scratch with WonderFlex as well, with the visor made out of clear plastic covered with window tint.

Me again, and its about the helmet again.

How did you make it? Like shaping and putting together the pieces.

I see, well that helps.

umm... what kind of foam do I use? I was going to use heat molding plastic for the armor, but I will take a cheaper route if one presents itself.

Also, what did you use for the visor and what the silvery thing underneath the visor?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vivid-anxiety In reply to globalionGrid [2010-06-28 05:55:21 +0000 UTC]

I used thin sheets of kids' craft foam. I got a pack of them from Michael's, but they're common in any craft store. I wrap Wonderflex over the foam pieces for the final product, so I used foam for the base.

The visor is a piece of thick clear plastic heated and bent into the correct angle. Sheets of black window tint were stuck to both sides of the plastic to make it dark. The silver at the bottom is duct tape to keep the tint on and to protect myself from the edges of the cut plastic.

globalionGrid In reply to vivid-anxiety [2010-06-28 06:28:22 +0000 UTC]

good thing I work at Michaels then. I buy that foam all the time and actually have some left over at home. I'm going to have to hunt down a store that sells wonderflex or buy it online.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vivid-anxiety In reply to globalionGrid [2010-06-28 21:54:51 +0000 UTC]

Convenience!

There's only one store that sells Wonderflex. You'll probably have to buy it online. I get it here: [link]

globalionGrid In reply to vivid-anxiety [2010-06-29 03:53:11 +0000 UTC]

I see, well pricing isn't too bad. I take it, its not very thick,so it has to be get layered in some spots. Oh, wait, you used it to cover the foam didn't you? Did you spray paint it afterwards?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vivid-anxiety In reply to globalionGrid [2010-06-29 04:04:49 +0000 UTC]

It's got the consistency of plastic milk containers. It doesn't need to be layered if wrapped around foam or other things. It's pretty thin, but quite strong. I spray painted the Wonderflex afterward.

globalionGrid In reply to vivid-anxiety [2010-06-29 04:39:38 +0000 UTC]

That is good news, saves me haveing to use multiple sheets. lol

I hope you don't mine, and I should have asked before, but I downloaded the step by step image you had for the helmet, so I have a detailed reference.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vivid-anxiety In reply to globalionGrid [2010-06-29 05:26:58 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I should probably tell you this now. I could just barely fit all my pieces on one of the jumbo sheets. I had to use some scraps of another for my anklets, belt, and hip plates. I'm a pretty small person (just under 5 feet tall...) so if you're bigger, you'll probably need two full sheets.

Feel free to download and use the image. C: I'm glad they could be useful.

I ususally buy more then I need on stuff. When I bought the wood for my keyblade, after I was done building it, I had enough leftover wood to make a whole new keyblade. If you haven't seen it, there are pics on my gallery, I don't remember if you saw it or not.

Well I'm posting the next WIP tomorrow, after I'm done painting it.

vivid-anxiety In reply to globalionGrid [2010-06-29 05:58:11 +0000 UTC]

I saw the WIPs. It puts mine to shame. C: Can't wait to see the finished version of both the keyblade and armor.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

globalionGrid In reply to vivid-anxiety [2010-06-29 06:26:28 +0000 UTC]

Well I wouldn't put your keyblade to shame, to be honest my dad did all the shaping and cutting, I helped a little. I'm just doing the painting and finishing touches.

The armor won't be done for some time. the keyblade will be be done fully in a few weeks, depending on construction of the keychain. I'm going to be exact chain used from the video game. No cheap short cuts for me. lol

Would you happen to have any of the references you used for your keyblade handy? I need to remake my keyblade, but the references I have aren't that great.

Good to be accurate!
