An interesting study in contrasts, this photo of a sadhu. He appears to be slightly smiling, but his whiskers give the impression of a frown, making him seem appropriately enigmatic. Both his off-white facial hair and his head hair (dyed blond by the yellow paint) clash with his dark brown skin and even darker brown freckles. And both the beard and the wildly painted forehead are in conflict with the sadhu's almost clerical garb of dark blue and dark brown. India is a land of many contradictions - whimsy and hardship, tradition and multiculturalism, the exotic and the mundane - and this photograph captures that technicolor mosaic well.
