hi again! i have a question about the lyre again! can you tune the strings to get a less metalic sound to them? is it possible? like that it sounds softer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VikingWidunder In reply to deviantwin15 [2013-04-29 23:20:18 +0000 UTC]

that is a good question, because my Lyre is small and it's body is not very long so the sound isn't too harsh nor too "metalic-like" the sound, however, i really have to be "gentle" with it when playing, not pushing the strings like in a electric-guitar, mor like pushing the 3 last strings of an accounstic guitar, softer, with the fingertips only, pushing the strings to the sides and not up.

VikingWidunder In reply to deviantwin15 [2013-04-28 15:06:44 +0000 UTC]

well the holes are too tiny but yes i think it is possible i have no doubt, the sound wouldn't be the same but it is okay in a Lyre like this ^^

VikingWidunder In reply to deviantwin15 [2013-04-27 23:10:43 +0000 UTC]

when all strings are tuned in a manner that they can make a continues melody, it sounds wonderful. When i usualy play it, i enjoy a lot, but once my girlfriend played for me and i have fallan asleepm and i slept well ^^

hi! it is Lovey! how do you play it? is it hard to learn? Hail Bragi!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VikingWidunder In reply to deviantwin15 [2013-04-24 09:50:22 +0000 UTC]

Hi! well it isn't hard, there are harder lyres such as the Trossingen Lyre 6th century Germanic Lyre. I play it by grabing it with one hand, and with the other hand i hit the strings with my fingers, very smooth and gentle so the sound might come in a soft manner and not to harsh. The hardest thing is tuning the lyre in a manner that all strings will make a whole melody. ^^ Hail Bragi my friend

AntaresDrake [2010-12-31 23:08:18 +0000 UTC]

Ohoho, it reminds me of something I read a while back:

"Lovers have come and gone through my life, but the beloved one still remains. She's beautiful and gentle. She's full of grace, and at the same time she knows how to be funny. Her voice expresses all feelings; it says what any human word would never be able to say. In her lives beauty. Not the one of today, that will be gone tomorrow, but the eternal beauty that will live forever. She has the age of the world, and still, she's as new as the future that hasn't arrived yet.
She's a different woman everyday
I'm in love with her....
She is music."

Duke Ellington.

I had one like this years ago but it was plain and the stain was of natural wood. I use to play it at the ren faires and pagan gatherings. I have not found one that cheap ever again. I only paid $100. Now they are almost triple in price.

That is great, you like to play Music Instruments? i am a Musician and i love to creat music. It is good for the soul. Our soul and the souls who listen to us ^^ It is magic it self.

Jess-Foxx-Quinn In reply to VikingWidunder [2010-10-25 00:16:13 +0000 UTC]

I am not very musically inclined but I love the lyre and the drum. Its been over 10 years since I lost my lyre but it still upsets me that its gone and I can not replace it.

It was funny the way the lyre came to me. I was at a renaissance faire and someone was selling them at a booth. I picked one up and just started to play it, not knowinganything much about them. The merchant did not believe me when I said I never seen one before. She insisted I buy one, saying that it was meant to be.

When I play the drum, I play with the veat of my heart. When I play the lyre I listen to the wind or birds about me.

There is always something magical in the music of those old instruments, such as lyres, drums, guitars, flutes etc. The music is a good connection between us an the world all arround, nature it self.

VikingWidunder In reply to Jess-Foxx-Quinn [2010-10-25 11:17:41 +0000 UTC]

I bought it from a guy on Iraq and he bought it in Finland. for $50 i bought from him. I love music, i can play all instruments but the violin and the hornpipe. I've never tryed the violin nor the cello not even the hornpipe, so i dont know if i can play them I've never had any music class not a teacher, but i am a musician and i had many bands, i've played alone and still now i play for those who want to stay a while and listen ^^

I tried to learn to play the violin in school decades ago. I could not figure it out and gave up after a month. You sound like a most talent and musical person. Thats great
