Well, it's a few things, I think... For one, many iconic artists have migrated for greener pastures. 2: the absolute lack of any controls by dA staff has lead to people using the site as a mere image hosting... so, if, like me, you like browsing the main page looking for art, now you have to deal with people's fetishes (omg, so many weird fetishes!), teen crap, memes, selfies, etc, etc etc... The site is so massive now, that it's displaced the "art" part for just more stuff... whatever that stuff is... all they want is traffic, it may seem.
Oor, I'm just getting old, and can't deal with all the shit. lol whatever.

Eh most of the search stuff is just a matter of using the filters... or maybe the stuff I search for precludes a lot of that junk. XD
I know the thing that turned me off the first time I bounced for a while was the place got flooded with Steampunk, and every bloody
image had to be steampunk... the second time it was bloody brony crap >_<

I have nothing against fetishes.. I mean, everyone has their kinks... but I really, really don't want to see what people get off to.. Not here, it's not the place. And I'm talking about: Deformely muscular "women", or girls with impossibly giant boobs (and I mean giant, not just big), or with dicks, or impossibly obese... vore I don't get, or just plain giants fetish... I literally just, JUST found a new one.. like 1 minute ago... flattening! Really, that's a thing. People getting smashed flat. That's hot. And that's on dA.

I get a strong dark souls feel off of this. It seems like this creature would be invisible and just look like a cat rubbing up against nothing until you put some ring on for this monstrosity to show itself. Looks great!
