Astrid is a talented but poor Cockney girl who aspires to be in theatre, but was told that unless she can improve her accent she will never make it in the business, since "nobody would be able to understand a word she'll say". She exits the theatre and loudly complains to her friend Ruffnut in the most colourful language imaginable the unfairness of it all. But so great is her desire to fulfil her dream that she vows to do everything in her power to be able to act in theatre. She would bloomin' move the heavens if she had to, she would!

Much like the film, she then goes to Henry "Hiccup" Higgins to take speech lessons, and offers to pay a shilling for his trouble. Despite the pitiful offer, Hiccup sees the potential in the challenge, and so accepts. He makes a bet with his friend Colonel Fishlegs Pickering that he could take Astrid and her "atrocious accent" and turn her into a lady in just six months. Fishlegs accepts, and even proposes to pay for her lessons.

The deal done and with hands shaken, the work on her appearance, posture, and speech begins. Fishlegs is, of course, gentlemanly towards her, treating her like a lady even though she is not yet one. Hiccup, however, is a tower of rudeness, arrogance and sarcasm, and he clashes with Astrid so frequently that she begins to fantasise the different ways she'll kill him after she's finished with the lessons. By firing squad? Influenza? A leg cramp while swimming? Oooh just you wait, 'iccup 'iggins! Just you wait!

It takes months, and just when all three are about to give up, and after enduring endless days repeating "The rain in Spain" and "Hertford, Hereford, and Hampshire", Astrid finally manages to utter the phrases in such perfect upper-class English that Fishlegs, Hiccup, and Astrid dance around the room in celebration. But wait! They must put Astrid to the test! But how? And where? And with whom? And as soon as possible, if you please!

Fishlegs suggests the Embassy Ball, and Hiccup jumps on it. Of course! Why didn't he think of that? But before then, they need to make sure that Astrid truly is ready to present herself as a lady to the established elite. And so another test is set: If she can fool the socialites at the Ascot Races in two week's time, then they can truly be sure that she is ready to take on the Embassy Ball.

And so it is set, and to the Ascots they go. Hiccup enlists the help of his father Stoick to gather the ladies and gentlemen of his peers after the first race to meet Astrid, for he would first like to test her skills as a lady here before he presents her at the Embassy Ball. Stoick thinks it's a bad idea, but decides to humour his son, and so reluctantly agrees. Hiccup then excitedly waves Fishlegs over.

The Colonel is proudly smiling as he arrives with Astrid by his arm. She is as impeccable as any duchess, turning heads wherever she goes, and Fishlegs and Hiccup are absolutely delighted at the pleasant commotion that she is stirring simply by the way she walks, and glances, and - by Jove, who would have thought it! - the way she speaks.

She flies by the conversations splendidly... and Fishlegs and Hiccup are about to congratulate themselves on a job well done when the conversation turns, and Astrid begins to prattle on topics that a lady of high status would not have known. Her true colours are then more fully revealed when the main race begins, and she shouts at her horse to "move yer bloomin' arse!"

Rather than get angry, Hiccup finds the whole thing incredibly amusing, realising that he likes Astrid the spirited Cockney girl more than Astrid the refined lady, but Stoick warns him to stop while he is still ahead, and begs him to save everyone the embarrassment by not bringing her to the Embassy Ball. Hiccup disagrees, and thinks that Astrid can still become a lady in time for the Ball. She is ready... she just needs a bit more polishing, that's all!

Fishlegs also backs out of the bet once they get home for supper, but Hiccup once again stubbornly refuses. Astrid sits next to them, barely touching her food, for once quiet amidst her embarrassment and frustration. She had been so close to her goal! So close. She can't believe that she had blundered through it. She's grateful that Hiccup still believes in her though, although she will still kill him after this enterprise is over. She vows to pass the Embassy Ball test with flying colours, and then she's going to lovingly wring his neck with her bare hands.

And here is where we have an intermission, just like in the film XD but the rest of this AU (drabble? oneshot?) goes on in nearly the same vein as the movie. I could continue this in a separate submission as text if you guys want, but for now this is getting really long and will stop here
