A martial artist who set off for Southtown to rescue his sister Yuri. He encountered a mysterious man named Mr. Karate, who turns out to be his father, who arranged for Yuri's kidnapping under coercion from Geese Howard. Ryo and his family and friend Robert Garcia then set out to take down Geese, an effort that ends in failure. Ever since then, he joins the King of Fighters Tournament on a regular basis to attain funding for his family's Dojo, which would later expand to include a restaurant. A dedicated fighter and loyal brother and son, he trains hard to improve himself and promote his dojo, though his old fashioned ways often put him at odds with Yuri and Robert. Ryo has often attempted to recruit King to teach at his dojo, an effort that ends in failure, but has earned her affections toward him.

Ryo appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the background of the King of Fighters Stadium stage, his appearance guaranteed when the stage plays his themes from Art of Fighting and King of Fighters. His likeness is also the basis of a costume for the Mii Brawler.
