Yes it's a shameless Final Fantasy tribute
I really wanted some mimic style monsters in the game- unfortunately they didn't make it into the beta as it didn't match the final loot system. But it was worth a try ^^
Argh which category- is it an item... or a monster? Or both?!

xD Thankfully in Boktai you could poke chests from two squares away to make sure they were real, and in KH 3##/2 days you can reflect the mimic's attacks xD

what a intresting monster~ I always want to find a 'nomal'mimic (to have some money~) but... in the real (in RPGs) those two of them just pop's up and hit me critical..T.T

I always loved the mimic in rpgs, although creative game masters in pen and paper have found some really nasty ways to use them that don't involve treasure chests.
(one of my personal favorites was one that hid as a set of cobblestones on the floor)

Well in some situations mimics are more like shape shifting sticky amoebas then just monsters that LOOK like chests.
in that case they look like whatever is convenient then turn into a horrible toothy thing when you least expect.
The cobblestone one was actually a really long sort of snake creature that hid in the floor with just its top looking like a cobblestone. after you stepped near it it popped out like a jack in the box and started bludgeoning people to death

Oh gosh I hate theses things xD You approach them innocently (actually, greedily), and then bam! They hurt!
I like the Sunken treasure chest one best just because of how creepy it looks.

haha yeah..they're damn annoying actually, but I really love the idea of them, and had to try out my own versions XD Im glad you like the sunken one..we were going to do a pirateship graveyard level, and I figured they would fit there
