Description UPDATED FILE: Version 1.6 ~ April 28th 2016
This is a guide for new users who would like to know how they can get started with using the fractal art program Ultra Fractal. It includes links to some of the best, and most relevant online tutorials and resources, on DA and elsewhere. I have also added a number of hints and tips that I have learned myself, along the way.

Please note that this is not a tutorial on the program, just a quick reference to other sources of quality information. A few people have asked if I would provide this info so here it is! Hopefully it will be of interest and help people to get started with UF.

If you find this informative and useful please this deviation so others can find it.

Revision history:
  • January 18th 2008, original v1.0 uploaded.
  • November 21st 2008, v1.1: removed broken links, added new links and notes on UF v.5.
  • January 12th 2010, v1.2: updated with link to new JP course e-books, the UF Wiki and other DA links.
  • December 8th 2011, v1.3: broken web links corrected/removed.
  • November 22nd 2013, v1.4: Added links to online video tutorials and to JP’s sample ebook chapter. Other small corrections/updates.
  • December 22nd 2014, v1.5: broken web links removed/corrected. New link to resources on DA added.
  • April 28th 2016, v1.6: several links to extinct resources removed (i.e the UF Wiki, now gone). Link to UF Forum and other DA resources added.

Downloading notes:
  • Click the download link just above the image title^^^. It's a 9-page .PDF file - it should open in your browser.
  • If not try downloading the file to your hard drive first and then try opening it.
  • Still no luck opening it? Try the free Acrobat Reader from Adobe: Link .

A Spanish translation of the original English v.1 file is available here: Aprendiendo Ultra Fractal
An Italian translation of the English v1.3 file is available here: Impariamo a usare Ultra Fractal

PS. Wow! A daily Deviation!
Thanks so much DeirdreReynolds for suggesting it and FantasyStock for featuring it!

ENGLISH:
Hello. No this is not a ridiculous question.

This Guide is available in Italian and Spanish versions only because two people kindly volunteered to do the translation in their own free time. Nobody has come forward with an offer to do a French translation. That is why it's not available in your language or other languages such as Dutch, German, Swedish etc.

If it's any help it is possible for you to copy and paste the English text, a little at a time, into Google translate to get a rough translation into French, as I have done with this reply:Β Google Translate

GOOGLE FRENCH:
Bonjour.

This update seems very useful, Chris. Thank you for taking time to add information.Β

I've found things I'm very wobbly with such as Outside Colouring which I can't associate with colour simply because I use the Gradient tool a lot.

I'll take time to study and try out what you advise.

Have a good weekend. It's cold here. Brrr!Β

Velvet--Glove In reply to CopperColour [2013-11-22 19:49:31 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome, Sue, I hope it helps.

Outside Colouring is a misnomer. It's not really to do with colour as such, I think of it more as adding shape and texture to the "skeleton" of the formula. Actual colour is added, as usual, with the gradient and it often follows the trap shape in fairly predictable ways. Your skill with gradients will be a great asset, I'm sure. You just need a little more practice.

It's pretty cold here too.

Chris, I'm sure I'm going use this. I started UF a couple of years ago, and had to quit. A few months ago I started Apophysis and rather than help, I think it confused me and I went into overwhelm. So I'm going to start over in UF and stay there! Learning doesn't come as easily as it used to and I just need to slow down and start at the beginning with your help and the user manual Thanks again

You're welcome, dear. I have picked the best tutorials for new users like yourself to get going with so I hope you will find them useful. If you prefer (or would like) a more structured course then I can highly recommend Janet Parke's classes, they are very good indeed.

Good luck!

How long did it take you to figure it out? And I wanted to say that I LOOOVE your style because even though there are many fractal art geniuses (they are usually cold - and not very friendly works) anyway I am hoping someday - someday - hopefully soon to also be able to do warmer and more inviting works that your ussual fractal.
thanks again

Velvet--Glove In reply to Audrey-Dugan-Art [2012-06-22 14:28:52 +0000 UTC]

I first discovered Ultra Fractal 4 in June 2006 but wasn't able to do much with it at first. So I took Janet Parke's online classes a couple of months later - an introductory course covering the basics and then the masking course. These are what clinched it for me, by giving me the knowledge of how to use UF purposefully and creatively. By the end of that year I felt fairly confident in what I was doing and just went on from there. Since then I've had over five years of almost daily practice and learning (you never stop learning new tricks), including a second phase of quite intense study when UF 5 was released in 2008. This updated program brought with it a very different way of making images (using plugins, and other techniques such as image import for creative effect) - I guess it took another 6-12 months for me to figure out and master these new techniques.

I guess this probably sounds a long time to you but as with anything worthwhile like learning a musical instrument, becoming a good photographer or painter, it takes time and much practice to polish your skills. It is a lot of fun and very satisfying, though, so if you feel this really is something you could do well (as I did in the beginning) then I would encourage you to follow the advice given in this tutorial and have a go at it! If you can afford Janet's e-books, which I highly recommend, then that will certainly help you on your way. Good luck... and have fun!
