never go 100% black, otherwise you can't add depth.

It's just that I do traditional art, with colored pencils, and those can be tough to mix colors with.

it can be, yes. My advice is to search up some shading, blending techniques for traditional media. Since it's a completely different take on coloring.
And be sure to have as many hues as possible at yuor disposal.
