Gosh, it's SO true.
On my last conference I've seen a poster presentation titled "Can songbirds stutter?" Research like this have no application at all, but curiosity of the human race is unlimited. Also, who knows, they may commit a breakthrough and find a very useful new technology just accidentally, like Alexander Fleming did.

The conclusions of grants and even sciences fairs areso forced, trying to find any reason to be funded, because they just want to know "so how does that affect me? How does that affect me? How does that affect me? Is it extreme and horrific enough to make me care? Cancer?! That mysterious killer?! Of course I'll fund you. You could help us save the world! Through your study of marsh periwinkles and how it sticks its button out during low tide."
