Background: Born in Novosibirsk in the depths of Siberian Russia, Elizaveta Lesnova is the daughter of an engineer and a freelance artist. As a young girl, she wasn’t even remotely into combat sports – growing up, most of her free time was spent with her nose in a comic, watching classic cartoons or kicking the butt of the latest FPS game. In her teens, she got into gymnastics then cheerleading and Liza was always athletic but fighting, let alone professionally?

It didn’t even cross her mind. She was just another young woman growing up, having fun with her friends and not really worrying about her future.

It was all by chance really; one day, one of Liza’s friends showed her an MMA bout. And Liza, despite herself, thought it was the coolest thing ever. She fangirled over everything about it, watched every clip and match she could get her hands on and, a month or so later, went out to find herself a gym – fully intending to be the next big thing.

She found a dojo and signed up for every class she thought was relevant. As with all fresh students, she was given a nickname. Hers was Squirrel, chosen for her due to her bright-eyed and bushy tailed attitude.

Unfortunately for Liza, the dojo she signed up to was run by a notorious ex-covert ops agent who had no interest in indulging that sort of thing. Recognising what she believed to be a lack of commitment on Liza’s part, the dojo sensei barely paid any attention to the young blonde. It left Liza solidly at the bottom of the class – not from any lack of effort on her part but simply because she wasn’t getting the help she needed to move beyond being a thinly veiled punching bag (and she had no clue why she was being singled out).

She tried asking her sensei for advice but got nowhere, except to be told that if she didn’t like the lessons then she should quit because clearly she wasn’t suited to combat.

Liza, however, was far too stubborn to quit and she refused to prove the older woman right. Instead, she tried the next best thing. The dojo’s star pupil, her sensei’s daughter – Jasmine ‘Blizzard’ Morozova.

Jasmine was a martial arts prodigy; she didn’t visit the dojo often but tended to blow through like her nickname leaving carnage strewn in her wake. Sparring with her was effectively asking for a beatdown – as might be imagined, there were few volunteers.

Next time she visited, Liza marched straight up to her and demanded that they spar. Jasmine, bored and making no effort to hide it, put her down in seconds and turned to walk away only to find Liza back on her feet and asking for more. So Jasmine put her down again – except Liza got right back up and asked her to show that move again, please.

Intrigued and a little amused by the younger girl’s grit, Jasmine did so.

Over time, Liza’s perseverance (and wicked humour) wore Jasmine down. Soon, the two were thick as thieves. Jasmine was spending far more time at the dojo than she ever had before and, with her ‘sink or swim’ tutelage, Liza rocketed her way to the top of the class. True, her record against Jasmine remained abysmal but it was better than anyone else’s and Liza could be relied upon to thrash any other student.

Her official nickname might still be Squirrel but her classmates had taken to calling her Lethal Legs Liza instead.

She even started travelling with Jaz, attending the Blizzard’s path of destruction through Thailand’s underground fight scene, teaming with her in a series of Cambodian street fights and winning a ten-match gauntlet in a Hanoi fight club.
