[Looks like the latest version of dA broke this one. You could only see the full vew by clicking "Download". So I replaced the preview with the full view and it works again, but the preview is now resized and looks like crud. Oh well.]Actually started and finished this a few weeks back, but it just happens to fit this contest like a glove.
So, here it is, my take on a platformer in the style of Castlevania or perhaps Ghouls & Ghosts.320x200, 24 colours
Update: Thanks for all the comments thus far. I've taken some of your suggestions into account and updated the image: changed the score text back to my old font (the one I designed for the lives counter), added kill and loot counters beneath this, and reworked the player's mugshot. (the old version was pretty poor
)Further update: Now with added moon and water to spruce the background up a bit.
Last update ever (hopefully): Just can't seem to stop modifying this one, hehe. Made two bat sprites, and updated the background with zoggles' suggestion, plus more minor tweaks

If and when I get around to making it (*sweatdrop*).. it'd probably run on Windows/Linux/Mac/Dreamcast and anything else I can port SDL based stuff to.
I'm currently working a different game with those same target platforms in mind, so will see how that goes first.

Pretty good for super nintendo level game, but i also really like the background. the perspective gives you a nice atmosphere and makes you feel like your inside a midnight world

as `wenstrom said above, this does look like a real game! i really like the colors and the characters, but my favorite part is the moonlight reflecting on the water. you did an amazing job on that with a very limited palette.

I really like this one, great work here, you've always been one of my heros, back in the pixelation days especially.
Ihe character's sword seems a bit... unsharp, and the characters seem a bit stiff except for the skeleton. The bats seem to be in a bit of a static pose. The grass is very nice looking, but it doesn't look very grassy, looks more like a rubbery clumpy kind of texture, and the right tree seems to have little buds on top, or birds or something of the sort, not quite distinguishable. The branches of both trees could use to be thinner in some places, a little more curved, as they feel a bit stiff.
Those are my only complaints, really great stuff, as usual.

Nice mockup! The characters are great, particularly love the skeleton, and the main chars run cycle (seen elsewhere)
As for the rest of the scene, the gravestones are nicely done, and the texture of the grass is fitting, though Im not keen on the trees. Particularly the one on the right. The top of it looks more like some weird alien than a tree. Whilst the shading and texturing on them is great, its the shape and form of them that I think ruins them.
For the background hills, I'd be tempted to use a lot more of that darker shade along the lower half of the hills, they seema little bright at the moment. The sky, stars moon and water are lovely though and glimmering moonlight on the water is nicely done.
Definately looking great overall though

This one truly looks like if it was a game! Excellent color usage and detailing. Only part I'm not digging much is the numbers at the top right corner (I suppose that's either the score or some random numbers put there for no reason
