Description i think a fear a lot of us have is that once we make the leap to expose what's inside us, there might not be much there to speak of in the first place.

this is a followup approach to my previous submission with the Jen character, and i think hits a lot closer to the look i want. the skewed background doesn't quite have the effect i was shooting for, but i'm not a background artist.

peace.

It can be hard to truly express what we feel, but sometimes it's necessarily. Whatever it is, whether there aren't words to express what you feel or you are not able to express the way you feel through any coherent art form. This is why i keep a thesaurus on hand, as well as a dictionary. Though all total, when i put my mind to it i can normally find at least SOME way of expressing things.

All total you did, ironically, a good job in expressing the concept that you had in your picture

Just think of it this way: If there was no room to improve on yourself, then why bother with anything. Perfection is unattainable because we prefer it that way. Beautiful job.

ah, weird that you should say that. i recently had a discussion with someone regarding how ludicrous the traditional idea of heaven is....if heaven is perfection in all things, would you not rather see what hell is like? if heaven has no point, then hell must have some hope
i dunno, i just thought of that after reading your comment.

but yeah, perfection is the ultimate desire but completely undesirable. and that's why it's so cool thanks!

it used to be my good friends and i would sit in the living room or in a bar *gasp!* and have enlightening discussions about everything from sports to the nature of God as a vengeful physical being or a collective consciousness. And then more stuff.

then all my good friends moved away and i get drawn into coversations about drinking and who's pregnant and whose truck is broken....yeah...i'd give about anything for a good discussion these days too....

still nice ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VanHeist In reply to greatshoyru [2006-12-03 16:07:04 +0000 UTC]

you know, i've thought about that? it would seem kinda fitting for the idea here, too, since orgasm is one of the most interesting human reactions (on many levels). It's a complete forfeiture, albeit momentarily, of normal consciousness, and at the same time an overwhelming assault on the senses, even while it sort of shuts off the brain. Because of its capacity to momentarily destroy control, there is a natural hesitation that goes hand in hand with desire, and so much of the same principle could be applied to this piece, where there is desire that trumps concern on the road to achieving an absolution of sorts.

and i really didn't think i'd end up beginning my day talking about orgasm theory hehe thanks for a different pace!

There are tons of things one can talk about, when talking about oneself. Because in all honesty, the one who knows you best, is yourself. And if you don't, you just haven't asked yourself the question "Who am I?" enough.

Back in grade school I liked being the shadow, concealing myself among others. But what the hell's the point of that? All it did was alienating me from everybody else. I don't really get this opening up fear, because it all comes down to how much you want to share. I don't what people really think of me, as long as I have my small, yet loyal group of friends.

You know, it's when you show your true self that you'll see who your real friends are.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VanHeist In reply to Rither [2006-12-02 16:16:28 +0000 UTC]

wow..very good points made there. even if i choose to be afraid of imaginary loss that may come of not hiding behind a facade, isn't it worse to lose your sense of real self?

there's comfort in anonymity, too. but no satisfaction. i think what might have been on my mind while making this piece is my worry that i might only think there's more to someone under the skin when in fact there's nothing there. one of my biggest fears in art is trying my hardest to say something and nothing being said at all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rither In reply to VanHeist [2006-12-03 00:19:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, about that; trying your hardest and nothing being said at all.. that's a risk we all have to take. You just have to remember what's important to -you-. I mean, in my "STFU" [link] pic, I really didn't care about what people might think of it. I just wanted to display and share what was going on in my world and mind at that point. I reckon that's what you wanted to do with this piece.

"there's comfort in anonymity, too. but no satisfaction." That's probably the best way to describe the whole "shadow" behaviour one might adopt. It is comfortable, but you'll only wish for more.

Naw, I'd stick with the groove I have now, but nonetheless, I worry that I might after all just end up on the road all alone..

Interesting concept! Daunting... just as the idea should be +_+

Theres something that just slightly bugs me though... I think it may be the positioning of the focal point (the hole) in the composition. My eyes are first drawn to the face. With such a good concept, perhaps the hole should be in the middle, or just higher, so that it doesn't fight for hierarchic power with the face? Just a suggesting/opinion!

Anyways! Creepy/cool idea! I actually drew something quite similar to this, but the concept was not as focused... nor evident lol (more just a creepy woman effect) Anyways, really interesting to see totally independent ideas come forth and resemble

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VanHeist In reply to Syaiku [2006-12-02 21:28:37 +0000 UTC]

i've noticed with dA, with so many artists and so many individual compositions that it happens fairly often that you can stumble across similarities, intentional or coincidental. some stuff is outright plagiarism, of course, but other times you do a double-take and go "Wow...I've seen that before...kinda...well, a bit..." heh heh

that's good criticism you mentioned, too....while i personally like the divided attention between the hole and the face, it's equally valid that it might be preferable to emphasize one over the other, and maybe to greater effect.

thanks for the good points and the kind words

oh, no lie there. but i guess it can't be helped to see it, since the alternative might have been a whole lot bloodier, and while i like gory stuff as much as the next guy, it would have been out of place here. so...i spose it is what it is, whatever it may look like

and if such were the case, it adds a whole new level of interpretation, which is okay with me too. thanks!

actually I think its pretty deep, and fine. It just hit me because that day me and my friends were discussing how theres only stomach skin between your inner organs and the world, so the organs would naturally have to be held in if the stomach skin is blasted away somehow.
