Description Tumblr reblogs from here, please!

I think Samara's become one of my favorite characters from Mass Effect. So this was done partly because I really like Samara, and partly to force myself to do some art/try out some of Gimps features. I inked her in Gimp, but struggled to do what I wanted with the program and switched back over to PS7.

I seriously need to do something else besides starry backsplashes.

What little I ~do~ know about Mass Effect includes the fact that it's full of starry backsplashes. I also liked the design of these blue alien ladies.

The colouring on this is really exceptional; the blending on her face is really nice, and whatever textures you've used to finish it really work for the colours. Just out of interest, what is Gimp like, nowadays?

Aww, thanks A lot of textures I use come from www.cgtextures.com/ , the hexagonal stuff was something I had lying around from comic work.

As for Gimp, I feel like it's come a very long way from the last time I looked into it (10 years ago maybe?) They do have a lot of nice features that are photoshop-like, but they're still missing a few things from PS that I use religiously. There's some really useful things with it for having multiple versions of the same file opened at different percentages back, which makes looking at the effects of zoomed in work on the image as a whole really nice. The UI is pretty customizable, so you can set up your workstation similar to other art programs you might use. As far as inking goes, I was actually pretty surprised. I felt like the end result really looked like my style when I traditionally ink, which is very important to me (granted, still took way longer to ink digitally than traditionally, but I digress).

It would definitely be a program I would consider using for some specialty type things like the digital inking. If I had never used PS7 before, I'd go as far as saying that it would become my main go to program. How it is on a comic page front though, not sure.

It's been about 10 years since I last looked at it too... It was all I had on Linux. I remember being pissed at it because the windows wouldn't all minimize at once. are they still all like, separate from the main window or however that went?

If its good for inking I might end up downloading it for that. PhotoshopCC is still rubbish at inking...

Yeah I think I know what you're talking about with all the extra windows. I think I had a similar issue when I first started working on it. But I tried reading up on the view modes (or something like that) to make the UI seem like a cohesive program instead of random undocked toolsets everywhere.

I do like it for inking, but I suppose my preference to how linework is varies a lot from a lot of people. I do like lines with a little bit of varying thickness. The start of my lines tends to be thicker at the start and thinner in the middle (unless I try to do hair). So I guess on that front it how good it is depends on your preferences. It's worth to at least give it a shot since it's still free.
