Description heirloom [ˈɛəˌluːm], noun

- an object that has been in a family for generations.

I posted this one before, however I felt like it deserved another picture, without any photomanipulation this time.

Waffen-SS regimental ring, circa 1943.
This model, originally designed for the French volunteers of the 33th Waffen Grenadier Division der SS "Charlemagne", it was also used by the two Waffen-SS PzGrenadier Divisions "Langemarck" and "Wallonien.

This ring belonged to my grandfather, Joris D., SS-Untersturmführer, 27-Freiwilliger PzDivision "Langemarck" - Flemish volunteers.
He served from May 1941 to summer 1944.

Military awards:

1939 Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse: 14. February 1943 - Battle of the Tannenberg Line.
Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen in Bronze: 21. June 1942
Verwundetenabzeichen, 1939 in Schwarz: 25. May 1942
Medaille "Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42": 22. June 1942

He survived the war and led a long and fruitful life. He was almost 90 y.o. when he died a few years ago.

Yes, at least parts of the whole story. He was rather discreet about his war memories.
If you're interested, here's one of the battles he fought: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_o…

Checked out the stats. Even thought the Russians won they had horrendous casualties. In all honestly that was the only reason why the Soviet Union was considered badass. They won through just using their own bodies as meat shields and zerg rush tactics. In the end Stalin never cared about his own troops. It pisses me off to no end that ingrates (mostly from western European countries) claim how the Soviet Union was some noble and gallant defender. Bullshit. It only cared about expanding its own borders and I'm sure the people of countries such as Poland and Hungry weren't to thrilled about the 'glories' of communism. Sorry, I'm digressing here. ~ C

I'm sure there are thousands of copies in circulation...

I guess the only ways to be sure when it comes to authenticity are either being a very knowledgeable collector or having inherited such a ring from someone who really owned one (family member, acquaintance...)

A third option being that  allied soldiers often confiscated rings/medals....from prisoners - or took them from dead men - in order to "bring something back home".

There are especially from Poland and Belgium, they had or still have originals to copy from, but they are casted, not engraved, it takes seeing a few originals to know the difference. I cant believe that other picture you posted with Galland's personal items in that museum, he must have gave them to them or sold them, he lived to very old age,no one took his stuff thats for sure, very well respected by the Allies, the Russians of course wanted him.

Did you get to meet your grandfather?

My granddad didn't serve in Charlemagne, but in 27th SS PzDivision Langemarck - Flemish volunteers.
We enjoyed each other's company for about 20 years - sadly he made his way to Valhalla 2 years ago. We were very close and I'm extremely proud of being the granddaughter of such a man.

To embrace your ancestor, you challenged and even refused parts of your education and culture: I'm sure he could understand how hard it is, he probably had to do the same when he decided to wear his uniform and he received this ring.

Your honor's name is loyalty

Valkyrja-Skuld In reply to SummaVeritas [2012-09-16 16:04:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, this goes straight to my heart.
It's not easy to challenge your education and the ones you love. Because I did love my parents, even if they lied to me about my granddad. They wanted to protect me, somehow. I think they were misguided, but I loved them nevertheless.

SummaVeritas In reply to Valkyrja-Skuld [2012-09-18 17:45:27 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad my words touched you, you deserve them.

It is very important loving our parents, even if we don't think the same and I admire you for still loving them after that sad event, I know people that don't talk to their relatives since years for much less serious things.

Valkyrja-Skuld In reply to SummaVeritas [2012-09-19 18:46:39 +0000 UTC]

I didn't want history to repeat itself. My parents rejected my granddad because of his opinions, but I didn't want to repeat that scenario. Of course, our relationship became strained for quite some time, but we somehow found some middle ground.

SummaVeritas In reply to Valkyrja-Skuld [2012-09-20 12:35:33 +0000 UTC]

Nietzsche would be proud of you for preventing the past from repeating itself!

I think some situations keep happening in the same family until someone is strong enough to do what you did, to change, to evolve.

I can only imagine how hard it must have been finding this "common ground" but it makes me happy that you did it.

Valkyrja-Skuld In reply to FredericDupain [2012-09-03 18:42:08 +0000 UTC]

FredericDupain In reply to Valkyrja-Skuld [2012-09-04 08:20:34 +0000 UTC]
