Description My very first attempt at making a mixed media/collage/altered art object

It is a small, wooden box which I painted with a turquoise acrylic wash. I then used some swirl stamps and white ink to decorate it. A view of the outside is here: [link]

I thought of adding more decoupage roses to the outside, but decided to leave it as simple as it is.

I had something very different in mind when I started it. I wanted a part of a songbook as the background, and found a poem from a German writer, Hermann LΓΆns, famous as the "Heidedichter" (heathland poet), "The Rose Garden".

It is about somebody who wants to enter a secret garden where a rose is blooming, only to find out later that somebody else has taken it already.

I dropped my initial idea and just let the things flow from then on

I added a vintage rose from The Vintage Moth and applied some glitter to it. Below the rose is some paper decoration in gold.

On the right I glued a small tag with a stamped dove, the words "Au revoir" and some French text on the background, added a Fimo cameo, some ribbon and a dried rose.

Feedback is really appreciated!

Size: 10 x 7 x 4 cm

I will enter this into Β΄s Secret Garden Contest .

I really like this piece. I'm currently attempting several vintage collages, and failing. Badly.
I can always get a picture in mind, but when I try and find the resources that's when I struggle. Where do you get all the bits and bobs from or do you just collect the over a long period of time.
Again, It's wonderful.
Thanks x

Thank you for your kind comments! I am fairly new to collaging myself, and really do know that feeling of failure I worked all day on some eggs, and am not really content how they turned out.

I have started collecting only recently, but when I get addicted to something, I buy tons of materials So, I did shop a lot to find things to add, and I try to go to flea-markets and garage-sales often, and buy neat little things that inspire me.

Have you uploaded any collages in your gallery yet? Give it a try and drop me a line!

I tell myself that it needs time to get the hang of it

Great colors! If I get a job soon, I like to do something similar cuz yours turned out so well. But savageworlds is right; although the paper is actually older than the rest of it, it doesn't look it - at least, not it the picture anyway. I'm not sure that I get sadness from it though so much as a feeling of wistful reminiscence. Now, I looked wistful up and know that it can mean "melancholy," but it can also mean "longing" or "yearning" and the last two don't neccessarily have to be sad. It can also be happy. I don't know if I'm really making sense, but I'm not sure that that really matters. What matters is that I think you did a wonderful job on this piece.

Thank you for your kind comment! It is so much fun to do a box like this, I hope you give it a try!

I guess one has to read the poem to get into the atmosphere of sadness But yearning also fits! I love it how art is always open to interpretation

Hmmm... Maybe I'll suggest it to the Relief Society presedentcy(sp?) as an enrichment activity. Heheh, a sneaky way to get around not having any money.

The poem is in German, right? Well, maybe you could post a translation?
And ditto the last part.

I tried to find a translation, but the poet is only locally known here in Northern Germany, I believe, and throwing it into the Google translator produced a terrible result

Yeah, I've never found an online translater that actually worked very well.

Interesting idea. I like your choice of elements in the box (which, since the box can be closed, also carries the idea of 'secrecy'. The poem, ribbon, and dried rose suggest to me a melancholy sadness of sorts (like remembrance of a lost love, perhaps). I might just be reading the message totally wrong, but the other elements (like the cheerful coloration of the box and 'newness' of the paper for example) seem to contradict the darker tones.
(...only an observation)

Hi Tom, thank you for your feedback! Yes, while working on it, I got this melancholy feeling also
Does the paper look so new? At least the songbook part is rather old, roughly 50 years. But the rest is, of course, new. Do you think that the coloration does not fit the theme?

Working with this new medium is kind of awkward for me. With polymer clay or photomanipulation, I can always redo it when I am not content with the outcome, but with the mixed media I notice a tendency in myself of being afraid to spoil it So, feedback is really appreciated.

If you are really going for that sad-memory-of-a-lost-love atmosphere, maybe a little patina of age (tea-stain on the paper, chipped or peeled paint, maybe a cobweb or two?) The color looks good, but a bit bright and cheerful. You might want to do a photomanip on it to experiment with various levels of 'grunge' or age.

Now that is a great idea, using a photomanipulation I am probably not going to change this piece, but I will keep this in mind for the next projects, and try to be more daring
