Description Heya everyone,

It always feels good when you set a goal and strive to reach, and complete it. I woke up this morning with one thing on my mind...get the photoreal view done today so my friend doesn't have to wait too long.

Seeing that I will be attending Siggraph's 2005 conference at the LA Convention Center these next couple days, I wanted to make sure I had made considerable progress on my commission before leaving tommorow.

Here is the photorealistic version of the lightsaber I've been working on for Tim. I have labeled this a prototype because I may have to make some changes if Tim asks me to do so but for the most part this is a finished project.

He has came up with the name,

Tyr N'Darr's Lightsaber
Knights of the Old Republic

He wanted a Darth Maul saber type finish and a brushed metal texture. Although I know Maul's saber is straight grays and silvers, I added just a hint of brown to it like the Master Replicas .45 version.

When I am completely finished with this project, I will show the saber against those cool vibrant backgrounds I usually make (like my swords) and show the blue blade ignited.

Enjoy!

Damn that's badass. Wish I knew how to render a saber like that.

Truly amazing. My favorite lightsaber in dA so far. Could you make a tutorial, or tell me which program you used? Im working on my own lightsaber, but its a slow progress

I can't make a tutorial but I made this design based off a client's rather crude (crayon colored, flat 2D) sketch. I used Adobe Illustrator for the technical lineart and blueprint style layout and Adobe Photoshop to color the finished saber art(in the Master Replicas style framed "blueprint" piece).

I guess my tips would be learn how to master using the "pathfinder" tools in Illustrator so you can really grasp how to carve into existing shapes and unify them. Photoshop wise, look at how metal reflects in real life objects and try to emulate the shades of color/reflection using the airbrush, gradient tools, smear, and dodge and burn tools. Don't be afraid to color over your lineart with a gray gradient as it will really enhance beveled areas nicely. Remember in real life rarely does anything have a hard black line around it, just variations of color and tone.

Lastly, most metallic objects have "micro-bevels" along the edges, very rarely will metal meet to a flush edge - especially with lightsabers.

Good luck.

The activation switch seems to be a little out of place, otherwise a good lightsaber.

That's not "Imperial code". . .that's Aurabesh, the written form of "English" (or BASIC) in the Star Wars universe. The Empire has their own form of it, but it's the standard language of commerce and diplomacy in the galaxy.

Anyway, Nick, NICE ONE.
