I'd go for the second one. Have them be mysterious and cunning like shadows in the night. so when the rest of hte pony folk figure out they too are just helpful ponies, everyone will rejoice.

lol I do love that way better like have Rarity and Rainbow dash freak out and think its ghost but Twilight and Applejack are like theres no such thing as ghost and then just when they start getting to believe that maybe there are ghost BAM its just ponies XD

Sounds like our Applejack and Twilight would have their work cut out for them. And yes Rarity would definetly be one of the few who might believe in the occult, however I was thinking instead of Rainbow Dash, have Fluttershy take the second roll. She is timid enough to follow the fearful line of thought first.
