Description The first full render of my M4A1 Carbine model (v1).

Modelled in 3D Studio Max R5, textures for the model in Paint Shop Pro 7, rendered in Brazil r/s. Took about 3 months to complete, 4 if you include the Mk4 smoke grenade and miscellaneous touch-ups. The scene took two says to compose.

There's quite a bit of jitter and its not a particularly soft render (especially around the areas with the depth-of-field effect) but I've reduced the size of the image (from 2048x1536 to 1600x1200) to help blend these areas.

There are things I could fix, and small errors in the way certain parts are modelled (despite the level of accuracy in the overall geometry), and you may see a v2 around here if theres enough feedback and comments for improvement to warrant one.

If anyone has any recommendations on other aspects of this model they would like to see, send me a message and I would be more than happy to make more images of it.

M4A1 Model is also avilable for download free at TurboSquid.com
Text on how the M4A1 was created available at my website .

If you use this model, please just give credit where credit's due - and tell me, I like to see my work used.

Enjoy !

I think I prefer the untextured version, but this is still very impressive. What software?

the model itself is very nicely detailed, but the texture needs a bit more work i think. i'm not much of a gun person, but the textures look a little plasticy to me; especially the scope. it could very well be what it really looks like and i could be completely wrong, but yeah

You're not too wrong, the depth of field wasn't really set with ideal constraints, so a lot of the metalic detail (noise in the surface, and some of the diffusion) looks like ass, especially with the skylight colour set to badly (it was like a mid hue blue).

I'd do another render, but I've since scrapped the idea of using materials on my gun models, because they take so long to produce.

i see. thanks for the clarification there given the quality of the model and the rest of the scene, it was a bit surprising for the texture to look like that heheh

Truth is I'd like to do an animated short, something involving guns and trained personel (i have a specific scene in mind). Trouble is, theres a lot of work to be done on making even more models and items to do the movie in the kind of detail and realism I'd like, and I don't think I can do this by myself.

A friend of mine had a POC (Proof of Concept) idea to just do a D-day type scene, just with WW2 boats, landing craft and a beach, seen from the air and several different perspectives, just to see if we could model and animate on that kind of scale.

Bit too much work for me mind you, especially now I'm working. Shame really. Still, my models up on Turbosquid for free download, so if anyone wants to make an animation with my stuff, I freely invite them to!

hmm brighten it up a bit.. ure loosing lots of detials... and get rig of DOF... this scene is way to big for DOF to be visible in any photograph u know

Point taken, cheers. I'll see what I can do with the brightness of the scene, trouble is the M4 is very dark metallic, so its hard to get the right balance of light (unless you shine one directly at it).

Also I'll have a v2 out relatively soon, but right now my Radeon card has died and using my Voodoo 5 PCI (all i have) doesn't work terribly well for 3D studio (mm, crashing).

Anyway, soon young one, soon.

i think you should take away the blurry look or whatever it is and show us the awesome detail that its hiding! a great static pose for a gun, but im not sure what you were trying to accomplish with the filter.

V1nce In reply to Legato895 [2004-07-25 11:37:46 +0000 UTC]

I was trying to just jazz up the image a little, the intention was to have the depth of field filter just blur the very foreground slightly and the background, to give a feel of depth - trouble is with 320x240 test renders you can't really see whats going on so great with the DoF.

I do agree with you however, I'm not entirely impressed with the over blurrines of the foreground items (not to mention the haze appearance too), and it seems like the only completely clear object is the rifles scope.

Maybe i'll just have to make a version 2 afterall. =o
