Is this before you learned of Korra?

A swamp bender avatar... nice. XD hrmmm I'm a big Avatar fan, and Ive come up with a lot about the way of bending and what not. But something illudes me... Aang is the last Airbender, Appa is the last Sky Bison.
If the cycle continues, the next time it reaches Air... where would the next airbender potentially come from. the show seems to make it a blood based trait, so Id assume one of his descendants. However They state at many times that people learned bending from certain animals or things, such as Firebending from dragons, and earthbending from the badgermoles, etc... this potentially means that almost anyone COULD become a bender of any element, supposing they learned from its original users, and had any aptitude.
This is spawned from my thoughts on things such as a firebender moving molten lava via firebending, and a Eartbender moving that same molten lava via earthbending, since lava is nothing more than molten rock anyway.
This makes me break away to what the avatar is, a keeper of balance, naturally talented in all forms of bending, because of his nature of reincarnation and access to the memories and wisdom of past lives via meditation.
o_o yes... I know, I think deeply into nonsense.

I have to say the airbender problem is confusing to me as well. Then again there have been theories that the next generation of Airbenders would learn from other animals such as the flying lemurs. Also was it specifically stated that Appa was the last sky bison?

I'm fairly certain that it was specifically mentioned that Appa is the last of his kind. As for learning from the winged lemurs... Highly doubtful, I don't think they use any form of air bending in their flight.
My speculation is that Aang may have to energybend the bending trait into some people. :3 Though the form and nature of airbending would likely change quite a bit due to a new completely different type of people. Though With the right tutalage and the right followers Aang could form a decent new airnation.

I'm not sure about the energy bending thing. But when you think about it, if bending is a blood trait then you would think there would be SOME grandchildren of mixed families (Air plus other nations) who would have inherited the Airbending trait.

Thats possible but unlikely, as since for 100 years not even minor airbending has been seen. Since all benders show their bending trait minorly at some point or another. The airbending trit would have been at least seen by someone.

THats basic, but considering Aang child will either be a air bender or a water bender, his genes of course will spread a little bit, but it will only be a maximum of 4 to a slim 5 generations considering the longevity that avatars have seen. Before another Airbender would have to be in line for Avatar ship.
Meaning all air benders would have to be of his lineage, UNLESS he can spirit bend the ability into someone. Not unlikely thanks to the fact we have seen him bend firebending OUT of the fire lord. :3 SO thats roughly the direction I see it going.

You're probably right but you never know. I sometimes wonder though if the higher powers (spirits) may have ceased the births of Airbenders until such a time as it was safe for them to re-enter the world... I know it's a bit strange for a theory but w/e.

No i don't think so, My theory is, since how it started was people were energybenders, then slowly as they built different cultures in different areas they developed elemental bending, and soon the avatar began to apear, with each new nation and their new learned bending element, they separated off, that is why people are born with a bending ability, sectioned off from others, It may be based on lineage, or possibly location, or some combination of both, my guess is lineage. Descending from earthbenders will bring an earthbender, energy bending has the ability to remove the bending ability, so on can assume it can put the bending ability into someone, or possibly just change what they can bend. I'unno, the creators left a lot of holes in the background.

That would be possible but I don't know how many people would volunteer to be airbenders.
As for the holes in the energy bending background, I must agree. Although I did like how the energy bending (though a bit far-fetched) allowed Aang to be true to his religious beleifs.

I'd Stick to earthbending, the potential eventual metal bending is motivation 8D

I prefer the thought of using a concentrated blast of wind paired with a sharp blade to cut through most oppenents 8D not to mention cloud bending with a waterbender.

Personally I curse the 24 hour week that I'm on currently... (note, not a typo, just think about that for a bit)
I've got a full time job and now free-lance work, and somehow I'm trying to complete Dreams of Spring... [Sigh]
But projects are good, they give you something to do when your usual inspiration runs short ^^
