Modern-day Istanbul was called Istanbul only after the Turkish Revolution, as far as I know. Constantinople (Konstantiniyye) was the city's official name until 1923.

The Konstantiniyye the Ottomans lived in wasn't just a city with cultures from all across the Ottoman Empire. It was a multicultural city which inhabited all sorts of Europeans and Asians. Calling it Istanbul would state the fact that it was a city with a predominantly Turkish culture, which is wrong.

"wasn't just a city with cultures from across the Ottoman Empire. It was multicultural". mate that's the same thing, multi=many. I'll accept it was only called Istanbul after the revolution but it most definitely wasn't Constantinople, at least to the majority of residents.Β

What I meant to say is that Constantinople didn't just have many cultures from the rest of the Ottoman Empire, it had much more cultures from the rest of Europe: Italian, German, French, Spanish, etc. While the capital of an Asian empire, the city, from books and such, had an irregular European character.

You can't deny its history and its beginnings. For the greater part of a century and a few hundred or so years it was known to be Constantinople. This is historical as this was its name for the greater part of known history in the region. Calling it Istanbul refers to its modern view and not its ancient view. Before Constantinople it wasn't much then it became great. The Ottoman Empire coming later in time took over the city through war and changed its cultural demographic completely. If you want to be humble and honest to known facts you call it historical Constantinople, but if you want to be speaking in the present you say Istanbul. As simple as that.

It wasn't Offically Istanbul untill the Ottomen Empire Crumbled in the first world war. Kostantiniyye was the Ottomen Capital, Istanbul, along with many names, were just nicknames before the founding of modern turky.
