Description My friend Moo saw this at lunch and named her Voodoo...I like it so from now on that's what she'll be called. This is just someone from my imagination... My imaginary friend perhaps? Maybe I'll make a comic of story with her and a few other people in it. Anyways, comments would be greatly appreciated

EDIT: I uploaded a better picture...but I still don't like it. When I get a really good picture I will do a second update...

Edit Feb. 18, 2008: I have a better picture than the last one, but it's at an angle, so it looks off... but you can see the contrast a lot better.

You've done an exceptional job of choosing a light source and casting it on your subject. The high contrast, especially around the nose, gives this a very 3d appearence. Nice work.

Thank you very much! I've learned so much from/since this drawing, but it's good to know people still like it.

I like her mouth. It's really neat. XD. Now, you've asked for advanced here... So such you will get.

Photographed your drawing? Not a good idea. The gray works all right for the darkness of this image, but normally something in pen should be sharper contrast. And less blurry. You use lines well, we want to see those lines.

Nose. Erm. That line on the right side shouldn't be there. It should be indicated by shading, no more. The fact that you drew it in makes the nose look, well... a bit tacky. I used to do the same thing. But when working with ink, you don't want that level of realism. It's actually best to nearly remove all lines around the noses. Makes characters look younger and more feminine.

I like the high contrast shading a lot... I use it myself. ( <3 high contrast shadows), but, er... those eyebrows should totally not have those bright of highlights before going into the eye shadows. Heh. Try find a few high contrast photographs for reference...

Shading. You did mostly good on where you put your shadows, try to work on using less straight lines in the darker areas. Crosshatching is good for the style you're working with now. Adds a bit more depth. All in all, you're working pretty good with the scribbly lines everywhere and it adds a great deal of 3 dimentional realism to the picture. Your hair particularly... it looks like dreadlocks and you achieved an effective level of depth.

Try to work a bit on getting your features accurate. I guess you want realism. I'm thinking you do eyes a bit large, your nose is a bit flawed... easy enough to fix. Keep in mind your angle for the nostrils when you do them, remove that side line when all possible and just indicate them with shadows... and remember there's creases where the two nostril covers are... I don't know the word. XD. But you know.

Eyebrows are too high...

Hmm. I like your style, really. You just need a bit of practise, maybe get a few stock photos and attempt to copy them to get the features down. There's stock available all over the place on DeviantArt and it shouldn't be hard for you to fix these little glitches at all, unless they're stylistically what you want. I'm just assuming you're going for realism.

Anyway, I really do like the picture. Your nuances are quite intriugingly detailed. I feel that with practise, if you keep up with this pen style you'll be one of the known artists for being unique.

I'm impressed. It's got a neat atmosphere and does feel voodooy. Keep at it!

Wow that was a LOT to read! that was like advanced, advanced critique.

Thank you, so much, for commenting on what could be worked on.

I know there are a lot of mistakes around the nose and eyebrows. I see it every day and that's what bugs me the most.
My favorite parts are the dreadlocks and shading/contrast.

I would fix it up a bit but I swore to myself I'd never toutch a pen to it again. I'v ruined way too many drawings that way.

I'll try to get a better picture up soon...this one is really bugging me.

Again, thank you for your kind words.

When someone requests advanced, I go all out. See, when I was a newer artist, no one EVER critiqued me (and believe me, I wanted/needed it). So now I make an effort to critique everyone who indicates they want it. No. Don't touch a pen to this. If anything... pull it into a photo program, lighten it up, reprint it and you can go over it again with pen. Or do another drawing. Editing isn't necessary when you're learning, really. Just keep producing as much art as possible and you'll get better.

Noses and eyebrows really aren't that hard, in the long run. Getting hands and foreshortening is far worse. Just get a photograph or a mirror and copy. Referencing is one of the most useful things you can do to get a feature right... don't have to copy an entire picture, just the nose or something. XD.

If it's bugging you, move on and stop letting it.

If I ever need critique again I know where to look.

If I have a reference picture, I do pretty good. This drawing was entirely from my imagination (w00t!) and inspiration.

It doesn't bug me that much anymore I just wich that I /could/ fix it, although I probably wouldn't.

XD. I use my imagination for some stuff too. Tis funness! XD

I never fix drawings. I redraw entirely. I don't know, I'm just bad at editing.
