SEM micrograph in false colours, pictures made with a Jeol JSM 6360LA.Picture from my personal stock.
Turns of a tungsten coil melt together after a lamp failure.

Very nice use of detail and light. Immediately what strikes me is the finely shaded outline on each of the loops; against the white background, the form of the coil is portrayed extremely distinctly.
The immaculate detail that is seen is quite captivating, and adds so much dynamic to the otherwise relatively simple forms shaped by the light. That level of detail against a very simply done shape conveys the microscopic feeling very nicely.
The distortion within the coil adds a great amount of diversity to the image, conjuring interesting forms and adding more depth. The simplistic lighting scheme works very well to portray the object in a succinct manner, and, as stated before, the contrast between the perimeter of the coil and the lighter background sharpens the look of the image substantially.

The original picture was very different with a dark and more detailed background, I edited the picture for a more simple and elegant rendering, something closer to a drawing.
