Description Oil on recycled canvass, 16" x 20"

Did I ever have fun with this. Here's the recipe:

Ingredients:

- One old canvass: the first colour portrait I ever did in a portrait painting class I took 3 years ago, in order to get over my fear of colour. It was horrible, but it was a start.
- some leftover paint sitting on my palette for over a week. Blobs of colour wrecklessly squeezed in excess out of the tube, not yet hardened (well, almost not)
- gfriedberg's image at [link]
- 2 bottles of Polish beer
- 1.5 hours of free time before bed

Instructions:

Eat well. Drink beer. Let the inspiration that's been at the back of your head for weeks free, and paint wantonly over that horrible early portrait that you just can't bear to throw out because it's a stretched canvass that you paid for.

Stop when you're finished, 1.5 hours later. No preliminary sketches, no underpainting, no special glazes. Do not overthink or overpaint. Just do it. Then stop.

Et voila!

Olga--

Wow - you really "hit a home run" when you created this absolutely amazing painting based on one of Gregg's oustanding photos. It is a masterpiece to be sure and one of your best. A "keeper" and a "fave"! And you might be interested in some of *my* digital manips on his photos here: [link]

Thanks very much for the accolades Craig, you've helped start my day on a very positive note. Yes, I've noticed your digital manips of Gregg's images before (most noteworthy, in his gallery of favs), and I find them well-composed and lovely. It's nice to share an appreciate for such inspiring subject-matter

Andrew310 [2012-04-29 17:07:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the recipe. If you did a larger canvas, would you scale up the quantity of leftover paint and Polish beer in proportion?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UrsaMinor45 In reply to Andrew310 [2012-04-29 17:31:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I definitely think that kegs can be substituted for bottles, and then after that, whatever's lacking in leftover paint can be supplemented with a good helping of bodypaint.

And thanks for the fav, mate!

I must confess, I LOVE this -- and your description of the `process of creation` couldn`t be more gratifying -- and charming. So pleased you had fun doing it!

And more pleased than I can tell you to have been your `raw material` -- truly hope to be again!
