Clearly this five-pointed, primarily blue echinoderm, referred to plainly by the name or alias of "Starro," is currently in the state of life known colloquially as "living," and is continually expanding its influence through smaller, subordinate copies of itself which serve as a neural uplink to the main being.

I'm not sure if I need to given my own research of the character. Since Starro is typically an extremely controlling type who sees the world as nothing but a body of collective minds to exploit with his offspring when played straight, I have a feeling that the same is true here. Though, Ace and Ginger's smiles do raise a few questions, namely whether it is in defiance of Starro's will, or whether Starro is more peaceful and understanding of those he his trying to subvert, thereby giving them mental bliss under his reign.
