It would appear I've been seriously infected with the meme bug. Ah, what the heck? I'll give it another whirl.
As I said, I prefer stories where the romance is on the sidelines, where the main focus is on the characters' unique growth than on whom they have the hots for. Even so, I love a good romantic couple as much as anybody...special emphasis on "good."
So, I ship these animated couples because...
- It's Adorable: As risquΓ© as Jessica Rabbit can be, her relationship with her husband, Roger Rabbit, is nothing short of heart-melting when you look just a little closer. Their relationship is built on respect, warmth, and humor rather than physical appearance. It's very clear that Roger doesn't treat his wife like a sex toy, and, as she puts it, "He makes me laugh." And she still has clear standards herself; she can't help the way she looks ("I'm just drawn that way!") and her loyalty to her husband is a true rarity, even in our world.
- It's Hot: You really gotta hand it to Disney for making Tarzan and Jane so pleasing to the eye while still keeping it (fairly) appropriate for children.
- It's Plausible: One of the reasons I love The Prince of Egypt so much is because I love the way the characters change over the course of the movie, for better and for worse. The character growth is subtle, but definite, and nothing feels forced at all. It feels like it really could have happened this way, or else they're not too far off the mark. It makes perfect sense to me that Tzipporah would fall for Moses once he was considerably more humble, while Moses learns to genuinely care about the welfare of others...even slaves.
- Because They're Alike: I may not be a huge fan of Aladdin, but I do appreciate how they handle Aladdin and Jasmine's relationship. When you think about it, these two have an incredible deal in common, and they just click so well. You honestly can't picture them with anybody else.
- Because They're Opposites: If opposites attract, then the sweet, sincere, slightly bumbling Hercules and the bold, feisty, straightforward Meg are the perfect match.
- Because It's Canon: Anyone with half a brain can see that Spirit and Rain will end up together. About as predictable a pairing as they come...but endearing nonetheless.
- Because of Subtext: Some people claim "Stockholm Syndrome" between Belle and the Beast. I beg to differ; their relationship not only suggests that true beauty is found within, but you just might like each other after all when you're actually nice to each other. Once the Beast helps Belle out and she learns to be a bit more patient with him, only then does the plant of romance start to take root. I'm not that fond of this movie anyway, but give me the 1991 version over the 2017 version any day.
- Because of Fanwork: You'd be amazed at the some of the beautiful fan art people have made about Lady and Tramp, inside and outside deviantART. And finally...
- BECAUSE I CAN: I've nothing against Terrence (the Terrence from the Tinkerbell movies, that is) but I always saw Tink hooking up with Bobble. I wrote a couple of stories about such a pairing ages ago, and I'll admit those stories are not among my finest work...but I still ship the characters to this very day. It couldn't hurt, at any rate.
Hmmm...dare I do a "I Do NOT Ship It" meme next? We shall see!
