Description Over at the Bulbagarden Forums, I recently began a fun little fanfiction project - I'm writing a DVD commentary for PokΓ©mon The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back as spoken by the Japanese characters themselves (in English, since I don't actually speak the language). Here, check it out! [link]

Anyway, it prompted me into drawing some illustrations of some of the behind-the-scenes activity I made up for the commentary. If you saw the movie, you might remember there's an extended underwater sequence about 25 minutes in. So here's Kasumi and Takeshi getting a quick breath of air from one of the safety divers between takes. I know my underwater scenes, and if the film had been live action, you can bet this is how they woulda done it!

Great artwork, but I especially love the commentary. It sounds like a real commentary, brilliant work. I would post on Deviant Art to not lose it. Is like to see it finished, but as it is, it's good, despite what that guy said.

Hope Takeshi gets an air hose soon

as a quick FYI and as someone who has done this exact thing on 'Farscape', 'Police Rescue' and 'Water Rats' in Aussie this is much much more harder then it would seem to be, especially when as in the case of 'Aeryn's' drowning scene in Farscape where she fell through the ice strapped to her ejector chair you have the following 'problems' -

1) very very tight environment - all filmed in a specially built tank on the set/studios in Sydney (no pool ocean etc) into which has to go the director/producer/cameraman/safety diver (me)/lighting technician and set technician.
Then the actor gets in, lol so as you can see its very tight on room/space to move which means no end of problems such as hoses in shot, other feet or hands in shot etc etc..

2) actor/actress able to handle themselves underwater - have been lucky in that all but one 'actress' on water rats was able to handle themselves uw well.
a few were even qualified scuba divers or like claudia black even as high as rescue or DM in nature.

3) teamwork most important of all - good hand signals are vital and when someone 'says' 'air' you get in quick no matter what or who is in your way.

lastly the hose is extra long but its always attached to the divers tank or at worse a pony and never ever on a length of hose as you have.
the risk of someone tripping over it in a tank is too great and the reg could then be easily ripped out of the mouth.

the other advantage is if you need to move in fast esp in open water or a pool shoot the last thing you need is to be faffing around with a hose when you can just swim in and give them the reg (you never force it into the mouth that can lead to panic - not a good thing when strapped into a set piece so tight you cant move or 'pinned' by something in or near a 'wreck'.

the golden rule is speed, safety and reassurance of your charge/actor/stunt person.

hope i didn't bore you

Awesome work. Misty is my favorite character. She loves to swim.

Is that true about the original plan for the Pokemon anime being 80 episodes long? Now it's over 600.

That is true, actually. The anime was intended to end after the Kanto region, and I wouldn't be surprised if the original intent was for Ash to win it all at the Indigo Plateau. But the series became extremely popular, Nintendo planned a second generation of video games, and the anime became extended.

I'm quite glad that they did go further, though. We had to wander through some mediocre Johto fillers along the way, but we got the nicely done Hoenn region and the picture-perfect Sinnoh region to make up for it.
