At least you can tell its a water type, the cat is just a black cat with red stripes, I would have automatically assumed it was a dark type if it wasnt for the fact it was a starter, it doesnt really have anything "fire" type about it other than the color red lol

Litten's fur spikes and heats up when it attacks, plus the general colour scheme is pretty accurate for a fire type. Black for smoke, red for flames, big yellow eyes for the heart of the fire...

But that only happens when it attacks, when it is idle it just looks like a black cat with red stripes, so I don't count it's attacking animation. Just as well I've seen how it looks when its fur sticks up on end, and it still doesn't look very fire type like. Also with black being the dominant color, it looks more like a dark type. It's like with houndour and houndoom, it is primary dark type, not fire, fire is its secondary type and the dominant color in its color scheme is black. To me I look at Litten and see a dark type, not a fire type because its dominant color is black, not red. Dominant colors matter, that's why pretty much all of the fire starters have had yellow, orange or red as the dominant color in their color schemes up until this point. And before you argue that "the red sticks out so its the dominant color" because I've had people do that before, no, that does not make it the dominant color. The dominant color in a color scheme is the color that there is the most of. Like if a dress is red with white polkadots, the red is the dominant color. 

And also I wasn't trying to insult the cat, this is my personal opinion on it's design based on what I've learned about character design and color theory in school (in an animation art and design program) which I have been attending for 2 years now. I'm not just pulling random opinions out of my ass lol

I know how colours work. It may not mean much coming from my adopts account, but art is my job. It's literally everything I work with when I create something lmao

I see it now. Litten is a problem because it deviates from the norm. It's different, a spin on the traditional design role of a starter, which is why so many people throw a fit in response to it's design.

Litten isn't a very good pokemon in my opinion, at least designwise. I admit it looks just stupid. The colourscheme of red and black can work, with pokemon like Yveltal and Zoroark. Just not with a starter. Starters are meant to have a unisex appeal, utilizing the perfect balance between cute and cool. Litten does not have that, and you really need to be into the edgy appeal to find it cute.

But, saying that it doesn't look like a fire type is as stupid as the design choice itself. Litten is primarily black because smoke is usually in larger quantity than flames themselves, unless you happen to be a firebender or some shit.

Now- Litten is quite clearly a cat no it's a butterfly i a dumb fuq wow, so I'm gonna go ahead and assume that the nekomata plays a partial inspiration (it does with most feline pokemon, even Espeon). You know- long tail, shifty eyes, feline... If it plays a part into it's origin (which visually seems kinda obvious to me), nekomata have the ability to produce "ghostly fire balls". Y'know, fire. That thing the world is in denial about.

I imagine Litten's going to evolve into a dark type, which is why it looks so menacing. I mean, to me, Mudkip's like a ground type, Azurill's like a water type and Gyarados is like a dragon type. What do they turn out to be?

you know, part of me denies the dark bit and hopes they're gonna pull some anthro shit out of their ass like with fennekin but instead make a fire/fighting evo
