Looks like Sonic missed that one.
Oh boy, now here's a photo motive that I've been waiting to shoot.
~18 years ago or something, about the time of the SEGA Game GearTM, I went for a walk with my parents in some far off forrest.
Somebody had dumped a TV into the middle of nowhere, and of course my first though when seeing this pollution of the environment was ... "OMG! This would make a great photo!"
Of course, I didn't have a camera with me back then.
Cut to a few weeks ago, when I randomly go for a 15 minute walk in a nearby forrest. And what do I find? Somebody dumped an old computer monitor with a crack running through the screen in the middle of nature! Yay!
Taken with my phone, so it isn't exactly the best quality. Applied filter to give it a "nostalgic" appearance.
...eh, didn't turn out quite as well as I'd have liked.
I actually came back later with a cardboard cut-out pixel-"ring" from Sonic 1 and a better camera, but they had already cleaned it up.

Honey, Tv's broken again! Can't switch channels anymore, it only shows this freaky face of a blue hedgehog again. I'll toss it on the beach.

Hm... it is indeed a curious thing to ask - where did all those item-boxes come from? Surely they can't be natural. So it is either Robotnik's own doing, which would be a tad odd, seeing that it would work against his own schemes - or Sonic has an anonymous benefactor, who has not only supported him in nearly every game, but also managed to stay in the background for over 20 years.
Either that or it's really just people throwing out their old junk.
...but why does jumping on a TV stuck on showing his face give him a 1-up?
What happens if he jumps on a TV showing, I dunno, a commercial for a new Yugi-Oh cardgame amine beachball merchandise videogame tv-series action figure?
