Description 12. Century cross shaped pendant from Estonia. Such pendants were fairly common part in women necklaces. Since they predate christianity and crusades to our lands it is thought that such pendants carried warding powers that protected against evil and magic.
Ofcource - extreemly little is known for sure because cristianity did a very good job in rooting out native beliefs. Maybe they were worn just becuse they are shiny and you could show at village party how wealthy you were and how much metal you could afford.

Do you carve the ring at the top from wax too? it looks as if it could be soldered/welded to the cross

You are absoutley correct - i carved the main part, then cast the piece and soldered the ring.

Cool!
BTW, can I use any ceramic thing like a small flower pot as a crucible?

I was worried about molten metal spilling everywhere
Where can I get graphite ones?

I think graphite is only important because its conductivity so it can be used in induction ovens. I think clay should handle the heat and the worst thing that could happen is that it just brakes. Allways keep some water handy. I believe that in medieval times clay was most common but since there are different kinds i have no sure way of telling how a flowerpot would perform in that sense. You can heat it up and see if it brakes.
