The northwestern states of Sagwornoh are know as the Great Northern States due to holding the major population centers, access to water, and economic power. The Federal Republic of Sagwornoh was founded in this region when the August Republic and Carter's Free State agreed to join together, shortly followed by the Carbon Republic and the Coastal Free State a few months later.

August (AG)-The Capital State/The First State
The first state to become a part of the Federal Republic of Sagwornoh 25 years after humanity was forced to live on the planet. The state was founded by survivors of the August Sun colony ship. Unlike many of the other colony ships that crash landed on the planet, the August Sun crashed a few kilometers away from the shore in the Misisip Ocean. While the ship soon sunk to the depths of the northern sea, the water landing allowed most of the colonist to escape and reach land, landing at what would later become August City. From there, the settlement quickly grew, and since then it has become the planet's capital and largest city. 7 presidents have come from the Great State of August, five of which from the city itself. Originally, the Gulflands were a part of August, but after decades of disagreements it was allowed to become its own state.

Carter (CA)-The Free State
Carter was the second state to join the Federal Republic, joining just after August. Originally founded by colonist from the Carbon colony ship that had evacuated by the escape pods, the new settlers struggled at first to survive. The few officers from the ship that were with the first settlers tried taking control. Fighting was common, and half the settlers went east in disagreement after a riot (they would later found what would become the state and city of Hope). After the first year it became Carter's Free State after a revolt overthrew the officers and those loyal to them (this group would also leave in protest, though going west into what is now Kipp). The new leader, Carter Mason, would slowly built the area up, naming its first settlement Cartertown after himself. The discovery of an underground aquifer significantly helped the early settlement survive. Mason would eventually pass away after being attacked by the local wildlife, but the now stable settlement allowed the area to thrive without him. After a few skirmishes with the settlers from August, the two sides agreed to negotiate a settle to prevent future conflicts from happening. This would become the foundations of the Federal Republic, and the people of Carter's Free State voted in favor of joining this new nation, but only if they could keep their autonomy. Carter's Free State became the Great State of Carter a year after joining. Three of the planet's presidents have come from Carter, two from Cartertown, and one from Kott.

Coastal (CL)-The Ocean State
Founded by survivors of the Morning Star colony ship which had a similar fate to the August Sun. The survivors decided found a settlement at what would become Morish City. After ten years, they began to spread out, founding Bulkhead to the east (named after where the Morning Star's bulkhead washed up) and north into what became Cape Kelk and Gulftown. After another five years, they found several new settlements along the coast. 25 years after arriving on Sagwornoh, the settlers of the Coastal Free State ran into settlers from August. The two groups began discussions, along with others from Carter's Free State, and after a prolonged few rounds of negotiating and a public vote, the people of the Coastal Free State decided to join the Federal Republic as its third state. It would soon rename itself the Great Coastal State.

Carbon (CR)-The Sun Bleached State
Originally founded by colonist from the Carbon colony ship who were unable to reach the escape pods before the crash, it landed in the Misisip Ocean, though unlike those in August and Coastal, it landed a few hundred meters from the shore leaving many injured and several dead from the rough landing. Despite this, the people of the Carbon were able to survive and used the wreck of the ship to found Gadronville, named after its captain who died in the crash. After a few years, disagreements began to break out, with one group heading west along the coast (this group would become the first settlers of Tulsa). After Coastal joined the Federal Republic, representative from this new nation arrived in Gadronville. After a close vote, the people of Carbon joined the nation as simply the State of Carbon.

Tulsa (TL)-The Stoic State
Founded by settlers leaving Carbon after a messy disagreement, they founded the Farlands Free State. The areas first settlement was Vulture Bay, though a second settlement, Tulsatown, would soon be built further west. Tulsatown would soon become the new capital of the Free State. They joined reluctantly as the fifth state a year after Carbon did, and renamed themselves the State of Tulsa after the capital, which by that point help most of the population. After gold was discovered south of Tulsatown in 102 P.D., the area saw rapid expansion.

Kipp (KP)-The Iron State
Created as a state long after the first five, Kipp grew as it was located between the first few states of Carter, August, Coastal, and Central. Since none of these states could agree on who owned the area, the government took it over and created the Territory of Kipp, named after a congressman from Tulsa who proposed the idea. Settlers began entering the territory, and soon iron was discovered in the Central Mountains. The population eventually grew to the point were it was able to join the Union, and did so as the 9th state in 67 P.D..

Peninsular (PN)-The Seaside State
Named after it main geographic feature, the state was originally a part of Coastal. Originally the area had no interest in becoming its own state, but after one very violent and messy governor's election, the people began to ask to be separated from Coastal. After another messy election, the state legislature agreed, and after a fierce debate in the Federal Congress, Peninsular was allowed to leave Coastal and was admitted as the 27th state in 91 P.D.. Since then, relations between Coastal and Peninsular have improved.

Gulflands (GF)-Gold Coast State
Originally, the Gulflands were a part of August, but after decades of disagreements it was allowed to become its own state. After seeing what happened with Peninsular, the people of the Gulflands voted to leave August, but not without opposition from August. It was only allowed to leave mainly due to pressure from the other states that felt August held too much power and were demanding the Gulflands either become its own state, or move the national capital out of August City. They decided to keep the national capital in August City. The Gulflands became the 28th state in 92 P.D..

Mayton (MA)-The Friendly State
Originally founded much like Kipp was, the Maytown Territory (that was the original name of Mayton city; they just dropped the w later) grew much slower then its brother to the east. Originally Congress was going to have Mayton be a part of Kipp, but many felt the large size of this territory would make it ungovernable, so it was divided along the peaks of the Central Mountains, which still makes up the border between Mayton and Kipp. Mayton remains one of the least populous states of the Great North, with Tulsa only having less people then it, though that's more of a recent change. Iron would eventually be found on its side of the Central Mountains, and it resulted in population boom in the last few decades. While most of the population lives on the eastern side of the state (roughly 2/3rds), there's only four counties in that part of the state compared to the 9 that make up the sparsely populated western half of the state. This has led to a lot of disagreements in the state legislature, though progress is beginning to be made.
