Following my project of painting images that impressed me as a wee youngster ... here's a Warhammer 40k peice. My main concerns were composition, atmosphere, and telling a story. in the books they always make the space marine sound so awsome so imune to everything but this picture is proof to one thing at heart they are still human

I like the idea of a human being in that armour ... even if it is a fanatical chainsword wielding zealot. Also, I kind of see the era as somewhat biblical for some reason ...

being a 40k uber fan and tabletop game player
i am absolutely in love with this picture, its very rare to find a 40k piece that is so calm.
this one is amazingly calm, yet still very brutal and dark, and grim.

School of hard knocks
Seriously, I've been using a wacom for a decade or more. It's all just practice ... even if you're not happy with what you're doing don't give up! It's all about endurance.
Also, maybe check out some You-tube tute vids showing the layering techniques many artists use.

what do you do? draw the whole thing with one dark colour and then start erasing with low opacity?

You're right to start painting with dark colours ... completely fill canvas down with darks and be as loose as you can. You can use layers in photoshop to preserve your linework if that's important. But don't erase ... start painting down lighter paints ontop. Put down your midtones then add in your highlights. Working from dark to light is a tried and true method. Check out some Youtube speedpaint tutorials for examples. Study light wherever you can and how it falls on different surfaces. You'll get it in no time!
