The woman who broke Dionysus' Heart!
Ariadne in Maenad gear. Daughter of king Minos (of the Minotaur), Ariadne went a little loony after her brother died, drank herself to insanity and joined the Maenad's Dionysian Appreciation Society. Dionysus fell in love with her and wanted her to marry him, but before she could, she was carted off by her family and taken back to Crete where she was reconditioned into becoming a human again. After a while, she forgot all about Dionysus and instead fell head over heels for a boy named Theseus. Whoops.
I have a picture coming of non-maenadened (I don't know what I am saying even...) Ariadne. Her eyes were not originally purple but when she became a Maenad, she took on that characteristic of Dionysus (Sort of like Cassandra and Apollo)....and it stayed.
I like the telling of her story that is briefly mentioned by Homer in (I think) the Illiad. Mainly because it supports my ship. But that is a different matter.
