I think Frazetta was the first artist I really "noticed." I used to buy Creepy magazine a lot when I was a kid, and he did a lot of the covers. Then the southern rock band Molly Hatchet used his artwork for their albums, and that got me interested even more. So between him and the artists that illustrated the early Dungeons & Dragons books, I'd agree.

He also did a lot of the pulp book covers for like the Tarzan series etc.
