Another dragon for the '2011 Planetary Dragon Series!' This time 'tis the sunspot dragum...
Sunspots are those little black or dark brownish blots you'll see on lots of false-colour images of the sun in your science books or online. So wait, why did I make the dragon look like it's exploding from the sun rather than some inky-bloopy pool of dry, molten goo?
'Cause sunspots are actually places where the sun's outer surface flares up, causing solar flares - so I guess this guy is more legit a solar /flare/ dragon, but meh.
Okay, so it's a little bit of fire on the sun. No big deal, eh?!
WRONG.
Most people encounter solar flares on a regular basis by viewing the aurora borealis or austrailis, depending on your hemisphere. These dazzling displays of light flare up in the night sky in colours of neon red, green, and blue, creating great wakes and waves in their trail across the atmosphere.
As beautiful and innocuous as these colourful lights seem, they're actually /quite/ deadly. A strong enough solar flare can knock out electricity, power grids, satellites, and even burn holes in the Earth's atmosphere. *ouch*
So, in order for a solar flare to reach Earth, that thing's travelling at, um...some million miles per second? And it's huge?! And super powerful?!
Yes.
So. In short. A sun spot of solar flare is when the sun gets really, really gassy in an area, builds it up, and suddenly lets it rrrrrrrriiipppp--

Yup-yup.
Space is so dainty.
Going off of a little different style for this guy - I wanted to capture just the burning/bright sun-sation (lol!) of the fires being released from the sun's surface, and to capture the tension of it all - hence the dragon's twisted form. (You realize that that dragon's the size of, like, Earth, right?) Craziness.

Interesting about the sunspot info. I think I actually knew some of that, but it was collecting cobwebs in the archives of my memory.

It's the size of Earth? Wow.
That reminded me of how you supposedly fit three Earths in the Great Red Spot on Jupiter. Although, I would imagine just one of those Solar Flare Dragons on Jupiter would ignite the entire thing and create a pseudo-sun. O_o
