What if cupid was actually a demon, filling someone with the emotion of “love” and drowning out who they are in the process? I’ve never had good associations with this day but this year is somehow different. I want to share words with those who feel the sting of not having a relationship and to those that do, enjoy your day and don’t bother reading further. For those who are not, here’s my advice to you as sometimes the mirror of being single can be a rough reflection:

We grew up with the promise that love cures all and without a relationship we are seen as incomplete/not meeting expectation. I no longer believe that love is the greatest triumph to acquire but often, the opposite. And for many, being “in love” in my opinion is their greatest flaw, their most evident weakness. They sacrifice not as a partnership but as a security measure. They no longer prioritize their dreams in exchange to garner their own sense of worth/value from someone else. Kisses are not contracts but rather a physical response to a physical desire. Presents are not promises but acknowledgment that someone knows your surface level interests. Keeping up with a relationship can be a constant ongoing distraction but the label is their badge of honor/validation. Sex is hype and honest conversation is undervalued.

I believe actual love goes to those that show compassion to ANYONE without ANY expectation for anything in return. It goes to those that value who they are and treat others with the same respect. It is selfish to believe a committed relationship is the only expected capacity to show love to other people.So to those still single on this day, I will not say there are plenty of fish in the sea etc. Instead: You need to love yourself first and foremost. Recognize that this love is the only one you will EVER be in control of. If you can learn to share your own love and not hold it hostage for only one person, you will see how it will come back tenfold.

So go about your day realizing that there’s a good chunk of people out there dreading their own relationship or just feeling required to participate in this cash grab holiday. But not you. Instead focus on doing something that you enjoy. When you can learn to live with who you are and enjoy that person, it becomes incredibly effortless to share actual love with the rest of the human race and to begin receiving it in return.
