Description This is a Pastel
(not the ones for kids!!)

A fascinating old medium, not something you are used to on deviantart - learn more here: [Pastel as Medium]

It's not on a canvas, also the finish it's made manually by me with a traditional procedure to get a textured effect.

I love the texturing of this piece, it gives it a very appealing look to it, especially on the mountains. I could have used that detailing on the mountains and bark of the trees a bit more, as I think that would have been even more interesting to the eye. The color of the sky and the lake are a bit underwhelming though, and I personally would have tested out a few different colors for each. The trees do unfortunately get a bit washed out against the sky color and the intensity of the mountains. I think this piece would look excellent with either a monochrome scheme or a cool colored scheme throughout. Overall, I love the piece!

Thank you for the critique, I'm always open to critiques..

However:

If you put too much details on a piece like this on the far side you tend to lose three-dimensionality and perspective so I can't agree on this point. On the trees bark I could agree.

Colors of the lake and sky are with this pastels very powerful and catchy, they are pure pigment pastels but Ii think that the luminosity and power of them are a dimmed by the photo.

I invite you to see more pieces in the gallery and give a look at the technique behind this pieces:

about PastelSome of my works can looks maybe too much simplified or not understood completely because I'm using a technique used by someone here too but not known among the most of people, with the word pastel they thinks I'm talking about the school pastels kids use and obviously is not the same thing so... let me put some history i have found about pastels with the help of sources like Wikipedia.
Soft pastel was invented by the minor french artist Jean PerrΓ©al (1455-1530) about the ends of XV century.
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the first in Italy who started use it in his studies and sketches. In his "Atlantic Code" sheet 247, he recognized the paternity of the technique to PerrΓ©al with the sentence "...a new technique for paint with different dry colors...".
However in order to get its popularity as artistic medium, pastel had to wait until the XVII century with the works of famous venetian painter Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757). The peak of its usage am
