And then they went and made him the comic relief in BOTFA.

Β I must admit that the idea of casting Sir Sean Connery as Gandalf the Grey never really made sense to me (he strikes me as a little too OPENLY formidable), but the idea of casting Sir Sean as Dain Ironfoot across from Mr Brian Cox as Thorin Oakenshield β¦ now THAT fits like a glove!

this is probably Troy working it's magic on me, but it's hard not to see brendan gleeson as Dain Ironfoot, especially alongside a thorin portrayed by brian cox. i cant say I'm super psyched about Billy Connelly in the role.

Β I agree that the 'Big Yin' does rather lack the long association with onscreen bad------ required to do justice to Dain Ironfoot (part of the reason I suggested Sir Sean was that he's one of the few actors who could convincingly put Mr Brian Cox in the shade; Mr Cox and Mr Gleeson are too well-matched in terms of onscreen presence to do justice to my personal theory that Thorin Oakenshield has something of an inferiority complex where Cousin Dain is concerned).Β
Β I must admit that I think Mr Gleeson is one of those actors with a happy knack of boosting the quality of a movie just by showing up, but just look at that fireplug-with-hair-on-fire face and tell me how you could prevent people from screaming GIMLI'S DAD whenever he shows up onscreen?!?
Β Finally I must admit that I have surprisingly fond memories of 'Troy' even after seeing it repeated on Freeview channels on a fairly regular basis and after seeing it in the cinema when it was first released; it does seem to be a movie that grows on you as it acquires fond associations with nostalgia (although I keep resenting the fact that they cast poor old Menelaus as the Heavy of the piece, then killed the poor old fool off to boot!).
Β I must admit that the scenes following "He's going to take the beach of Troy with a single ship!?!" (answer: YES because he's mother-loving Achilles!) right up until "It's too early in the day for killing princes" are some of the best committed to an Action film - and I must admit to liking quite a lot of the rest too, even if poor Hector meets his inevitable fate (I really should try not to let my affections be uniformly caught by the most heroic character in any given series, no matter how obscure or DOOMED).
Β I still remain astonished by just how chilling I still find that fight scene on the steps of Apollo's temple, to my mind the gold-standard for the depiction of the sheer carnage Homer's Heroes can wreck on the Enemy, even if the casting director did rather reverse my mental image of Achilles and Patroclus when she chose the actors (I am also prepared to disagree volubly with any critic who finds Ms. Diane Kruger an unlikely casting choice for the role of Helen - attractiveness is a matter of personal grace as well as raw SEX people! - although I admit that rumours Aishwarya Rai was very nearly cast in the role mean that I cannot honestly claim that I could not imagine another woman in the part).

the big yin is kind of a blowhard, not a particularly funny one either. it's not really nescesary at all for dain to be funny, quite the opposite i expect, but I'm kind of dreading jacksons choice of casting a comedian in the role.
and for the record, excluding Brendon Gleeson from a trilogy of movies where half of the speaking characters look like brendan gleeson is one of jackson's most unforgiveable blunders (though god knows there's competition for that)

To be fair, it might be more a matter of Mr Gleeson being in no mood to play Dwarf (or just being unavailable, being one of the most excellent character actors at work today).

very possible, but it's more fun to blame jackson (besides, billy connelly, for fucks sake)

Β I wouldn't have put it that way myself (partly because, quite frankly, Mrs Connelly is FAR out of my league, which makes me suspect that I wouldn't want to try beating Mr Connelly at THAT game), but I must admit that the casting choice seems curious - still, I had never even heard of half the actors cast by Mr Jackson before they thoroughly won my affections, so I will preserve SOME hopes (not least because I never expected to enjoy Mr Freeman in the role of Mr Baggins half so much as I have, which implies that I'm not so good at casting as Mr Jackson!).Β
Β By the way, I hope that you remain well? (it seems churlish of me to post my nattering without asking after the health of Mine Host!).Β

If the move design of Balin ends up looking terrible, then I will send an email to Peter Jackson, with your picture attached, saying: ''THIS IS HOW BALIN IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE!!!''.

Yeah, I'm not so thrilled by what I hear (not the biggest fan of Connelly, they should have gone with Brendan Gleeson)and I hope they don't experiment with warhammer-style tattoos or peircings, not very tolkienian in my opinion.
Thanks for the vote of confidence.

*CORRECTION*
In my comment, I said BALIN, while I was clearly thinking DAIN.
The problem arose because I had 3 of your Dwarf-pictures (Dain, Thorin, Balin) opened at the same time, so I got a little confused.
*
Well, unless Billy Connolly was joking, he said that movie-Dain will:
- have a big mohawk haircut
- have a lot of tattoos
- ride a wild boar into battle
One thing is certain:
He is either gonna be very cool, or very, very crappy - there's no middle.

Hehe, I like that smug face of his.
It's like he's saying: ''I'm awesome, and I know it!''
Probably the best depiction of Dain that I've seen, for now.

You really have a knack with drawing armor. Do you reference anything for these, or are all those details purely out of your head? Either way, really impressive.

these were without reference, although I did spend a few years apprenticing to a medieval reproduction armorer for renn fares. I've since started using some photo references. thanks very much for your kind words

How awesome to have that degree of familiarity with medieval armor. I love hanging around those shops at the renn., purely because of the drawing ideas I can get there.
