Description Pages 5-8 of the Deltavengers comic.
I think this will be the last grouping I do for this, aside from compiling the entire project.

Anyways, I really like the character of Hulk/Banner. When written well he’s a glorious smack in the face of the awful power and revenge fantasies that dominate the superhero and action genres. You know how they go. Poor put-upon person gains some form of freedom or power and then enacts their revenge on their oppressors. They triumph, gain respect, and are awarded a pretty lady, that sort of thing.

Now take Bruce Banner, nerdly little fellow, gains ALL THE POWER and promptly proceeds to ruin his entire life with it. He doesn’t get the prize-lady. He runs away from her to let her live her life in safety.

I love superheroes a ridiculous amount, but there is some weird fascist power fantasy stuff going on in them. I’m not going to deconstruct* anything, but I really want to address it. Banner is perfect for that.

Plus he turns into a giant monster, what more could I want in a character?

*Superheroes has been inverted and subverted so many times the genre has prolapsed.

Banner is practically Shiniji for superheroes.

I don't know, they're both deconstructions of the typical protagonist of their genre, but in massively different ways.  Turbofanatic already explained how Banner is a deconstruction of the typical "average citizen gets super powers" genre, but the thing is that Banner then becomes a sympathetic character because he copes with his circumstances, while still trying to be a good person.  He tries to stay away from population centers, he does yoga, he tries to stay calm, but he also tries to help people.  Shinji is a deconstruction of the typical shonen/mecha hero because he only takes an active role when he tries to run away.  The difference is Banner actively tries to make the best of his situation, while Shinji just... does his Shinji thing.
