Description When I first seen this little guy I thought he was fake. I actually thought it was a Halloween decoration. As soon as I found out it was real, I backed up a few inches. I like the markings on his back, it reminds me of a skull with a hat on it's head!

Ewww, spider webs are nice to look at and get pictures of, but I think I have to pass on wearing them..lol.

A few, I don't live at home anymore, but next time I'm home I should look for some. Some weeks its hard to walk through the hedges 'cause of lots of spider webs lol.

I also have some pictures of a big black widow I found in our swimming pool >_< she wasn't nearly as big though. Just scarier...

Yes he is, how big do they usually get?

Oh I should say, not "full view" size, his abdomen was about the size of my thumb.

Some never get very big, I think they must get eaten or something but, I've seen some nearly as big as the size of the one in this photo as it shows up on DA. His name was Fred. He built his web on the back window of my porch next to the light that is on all night (TONS of bugs) everyday one summer. He started out big but by the last time I saw him in October he was MAMMOTH SPIDER.

He scared my sister. She wanted to kill it lol.

I bet she did...lol. I think I would probably feel the same way, except now I know they don't harm you. This guy is a block over from my house and fall is coming on, so I don't think I will see to much more of him. There is always next summer!

Her babies continue to thrive in my mom's garden. After much pushing she decided not to use insecticides because of the spiders, and she hasn't needed to now because of the spiders XD

Seeing the babies were cool, they weren't as bright at first.

Wow! What a find! I thought it was a photo manipulation at first because of the coloring.

This would be a Black n' gold Argiope spider! They are extremely valuable for controlling disease carrying mosquitos and flies. They build really beautiful webs centered w/ a "zigzag" formation that no one can really explain. Although young spiderlings produce very long "zigzags". These formations get shorter as the spider matures.

Thank you so much. I posted this on Testriffic this morning and it has been an ongoing battle as to what kind of spider it is. So may people think it is a Banana Spider. Thank you for giving me the real name to the spider, it is greatly appreciated.

I agree 100%. Thank God they are not in the U.S. It is good to know that they are not venomous! I went back tonight and got more pictures. They pretty much look the same....lol.

I'm glad you could find this info useful. It should also be noted that this is a very common spider across North America and does not have a dangerous bite. Banana spiders are however more dangerous than Black widows and have a toxic bite that rivals King cobra venom!! Banana spiders are not in the U.S. (Thank God!!)

Thank you so much. I posted this picture on Testriffic and it has been an ongoing battle as to what kind of spider this is. Ferro001 says it is a Black and Gold Argiope spider. I believe this is true because of the zigzag web.

I wouldn't have seen something special in those marks. But now that I think about it, I also see a skull with arms.

Thank you, I love his markings too!! I only like spiders long enough to take pictures of them and then I go on my way. Now if they come into my house, that is a different story!

My wife would freak out majorly!

Fortunately there are no native biters in Aotearoa, but we've got the unwelcome Aussie immigrant White-Tail.
