This is a Pocahontas coloring book page painted digitally. I thought I'd try it out since some others have done it and it looked fun.
So the original pose and layout came from a coloring book page. I painted it and, of course, omitted the lines.

I tried some different color palates, but didn't like them so I stuck with the colors used in the actual movie in the waterfall scene. I gave Pocahontas a sort of warm light and cast because I wanted her to stand out from all the blue.

I guess it was supposed to be colored like a specific classic painting as well in the challenge (?), but I just kind of made it a general painting. I'll probably do a more "close up" portrait in a classic style.

Enjoy!

Disclaimer:
I do not claim to have created this composition, that was the coloring book composition. I colored this for study, practice, and fun.

WOW!
I used the same coloring page, it's in my gallery. But I actually re-drew it line by line and obviously colored it, although your coloring is by far so much better! I did it a while ago, before I even knew how to work with photoshop, you just made me want to re-do it.
Really amazing work

I take it you like it?
Much of the time while drawing this, I thought of that Disney song tape in Nemo.. you know the one.

Yeah, I know the one. I finally took it out the other day and put David Bowie back in.

Each day is a battle: Will Disney win out, or will Bowie continue his winning streak?

Well I think you did an excellent job coloring this I have always found Pocahontas unbearable, but this does look quite spiffy. My only complaint is the water doesn't quite look like water (and yeah I do know how ridiculously hard water is to draw) It looks, perhaps, too thick and opaque.

^^

The water is a little bit un-water-like. It kind of looks more like ribbons of color. Maybe it could just be a little more "choppy".

I used three brushes here; hard round, soft round, and pen pressure Oil brush.

Yep! When I colored this, it really allowed me to create different looks and try out different colors, use deep colors, take away the lines, change things around.

I'll make sure I don't color the real ones with crayons before I do it digital.

Tsuchan In reply to Naeder [2009-10-20 20:23:17 +0000 UTC]

I did change her hair a bit from the original line. It was still very flowing, but I added more detail and curl.
I always thought it was interesting how they animated her hair in the cartoon. It was more like one large chunk that stuck together, but flowed really well. It was almost like a sheet of cloth.

Yeah <3
I'm glad you added more curl to it, it really does look like the design made for her in the movie.
