Description It's finally here! After almost a year of silence, I finally finished the ninth tale for this series. The World Cup is great for getting the Hetalia feels going, and this one's just in time for South Korea's match against Russia today. Good luck to everyone!

Anyway, The Fox Sister is pretty much a horror story in my opinion; it's got some great shock value. The titular character is a kumiho, a Korean nine-tailed fox spirit. They often transform into beautiful women to trick and kill people. I had a lot of fun with this story, but it ended up being more of a hassle than it had to be. First of all the font I found (which is called Korean calligraphy, if you're interested) doesn't support capital letters so I had to put those in myself. If you noticed that they look a little wonky, that's why. Also I was stupid and didn't do enough research on Korean clothing before I got a lot of the drawing and coloring done, so I had to go back and recolor a bunch of stuff. This whole series is obviously stylized and not culturally accurate on a lot of accounts, but I didn't want to have too many obviously glaring errors. Hopefully it's okay now; if not then let me know.

The Big 8:

Japan-Princess Kaguya
France-Cendrillon
Germany-Β Hansel and Gretel
USA-The Wizard of Oz

This tale is similar to a certain tale in my country! ^u^ Only, it doesn't includes foxes, bottles, sons, nor even a villain sister! But I have to say, this is pretty dark and spooky
I love this >u<

I just googled it, and I definitely see how these two tales are similar! The part where Timun Mas throws the contents of her bags as she runs from the giant is especially similar to when the oldest brother escaped the fox sister. Thank you for telling me about this story.

ThatΒ΄s amazing story, though little scary and very sad.
Is this story real or did you come up with this? Just curious...

Thanks for your comment! This is a real story, as are the rest of the comics in the series. If you google "Fox Sister Korean Fairytale" or something similar, you will probably find a few versions of this tale.

Ok!
ItΒ΄s great to read about other cultures folk stories, because they feel the same as for exsample finnish stories, but they have their own way.

I'm glad you like the series! I love reading international tales too. (And if you have any suggestions for other stories, I would love to hear them. )

Well, I donΒ΄t know too many stories from elsewhere than Finland.
I think one finnish fabel tale, which explains why bears donΒ΄t seem to have tail is very good.
In finnish tales there is alot of animals, but I guess there is stories about ancient finnish gods. I just donΒ΄t know any.
Oh, and of course one way to look for finnish ancient stories is Kalevala, which is our national eepos.

Sorry, if I talked too much about my own culture, but thatΒ΄s all I know pretty much, because I canΒ΄t remember other culturesΒ΄ folk tales right now.

There's no need to apologize for talking about your culture! Until now, I haven't really had any ideas on a story for Finland; the fables you mentioned sound really cute and interesting. Thanks so much for your input.

Wow, that was creepy and twisted! Plus, it's always fun to hear a story you don't already know. Just one question, though - was the fox sister supposed to be Taiwan or a North Korea OC?

tsubaki11 In reply to Obiwanlives4ever [2014-06-18 01:13:15 +0000 UTC]

She's Taiwan. I'm not a big fan of OCs to be honest, so I try to stick to canon characters. And thanks for noticing the monk! I originally drew him as Macau (with a shaven head) but realized partway through that he kind of looked like Tibet too, so I guess I'll just leave that up to interpretation.

Ah, okay. I was pretty sure it was Taiwan at first, but then there was something about the way she was drawn with braids that made me think of the popular North Korea OC design (and also because she's sort of the main character as well, so I thought you'd split the story between the two Koreas like the Hunchback story was split between the two Italies). But I like that you used Taiwan; I generally prefer canons to OCs in things like this.

I believe unmarried women traditionally wore braids in Korea, so it doesn't surprise me that fanon North Korea has one! I don't always preserve accurate hairstyles for this series, but I figured I would for Taiwan this time around.

It sure is. The original story even had some scarier details that I had to leave out: the food they were eating was actually maggots and the wine was blood.

Haha. The original story is even scarier. I had to cut this out because it would make the comic too long, but the food and wine Korea and Japan were served were actually maggots and blood.
