What is the story of this region? I guess it was like how most old towns became abandoned, with a boom that started and then a bust that made them all leave?

There never really was much of a town there.Β Just a general store, livery, grain storage, and a school.Β This area is in the dry land wheat growing region on the Columbia Plateau in the North Central part of Washington State.Β The area was settled in the late 1800βs, many homesteaders were German immigrants.Β They created a cultural community and built a large German Lutheran church.Β Their homesteads were generally 180 acres which is a lot to cultivate with horses.Β Β Β As mechanized farming came into use these smaller farms were consolidated or bought out.Β And places were abandoned.Β Β The typical wheat ranch now is 1200 to 2400 acres with sections under cultivation one year and lying fallow the next.
Β
Β
Farmer was a place to get goods and sell wheat.Β As truck and automobiles became more common, it was more convenient to travel a further distance to a bigger town with more products and services.Β So these villages became ghost towns.Β Β There are at least 6 or 8 ghost town up there and hundreds of abandoned farmhouses, barns and at least 9 schools, many, many windmills and a dozen abandoned cemeteries.Β Β My gallery is full of photos of some of these.Β Β

I don't mind the heat. Of course I have a heat pump which heats the home and reverses when needed to air conditioning.

How progressive!
But I suspect the humidity is much lower here than you have to deal with.

Looks like the folks of Farmer need to apply for a Tourism Grant and get the economy moving!

Not much traffic in that area any more. But there is a story to tell.
