Question: Did you do this all on one layer or multiple ones and also did you start out with a sketch or just started painting?

I'm so glad you like it! 
For this I started off with a rough sketch of the body, and painted over it several times on the same layer. Basically at the end I had the body on one layer, the background on another, and a detail layer. So kind of a mix of both?

this is amazing! you can see so much in his expression, he's clearly cold but he's looking at us defensively like "what are you looking at" and almost seems ashamed.
