Description
Ursula K. Le Guin's short story "The Flyers of Gy" moved me profoundly (not really, but let me be melodramatic here). I recently re-read it.The final line is the kicker.

The real question is- would you take the one in twenty chance?

Very nice! I love the colors you chose for the feathers, and the shadowy wings. The expression is lovely - very tired, eyes downcast, heavy. It really captures the sense of the story, especially the end.
The Flyers of Gy is a very beautiful, strange take on an alien world. And the last line. Oh, god. Why are people so incredibly foolish?
As for whether or not I would take the chance - I think I would try not to, at first. I put too much value on things that exist here on the ground that at first I would be unwilling to give that all up and become a creature of the wind. But I wouldn't be able to stop myself. After a certain point, I wouldn't want to. To be given the chance to fly, and not take it - it seems so incredibly wasteful. The risk is part of the thing - dying is an inherent risk of living, falling is an inherent risk of flying. To refrain from flying just because you might loose everything would be, to me, like choosing not to live because you are afraid of dying.

I believe that is my favourite piece by Ursula K. Le Guin I've read so far. I'm confused, though--is the one-in-twenty chance on every time you take off, or over the course of your lifetime?

Flying is what all of my best dreams are about....It's that one thing that always makes me ache with need whenever I watch a bird flitting over my head like it's the easiest thing in the world. Sometimes I wonder if I was that bird in another life.
