Description Finally, the bookcover mockup is finished. The Lord be praised!
I enjoyed drawing this thing, and I was so happy to have finished it. What really irked me, however, was having to scan it. Because I had no scanner of my own, I had to use the university's scanners. They gave me so much trouble...

So, about the cover: some young people from Westminster -- Jo-Anne Rowney, James Kelliher and Paula Mendez -- are writing a book compiling memoirs on World Youth Day 2011, as well as guidelines for subsequent WYD gatherings. I was asked personally by Rowney and Kelliher to illustrate a mock-up of a book cover.

Now, whether this piece of artwork makes it into the book (or onto the book) is immaterial. I enjoyed drawing it, I loved picking up those colours and using them, and I loved recollecting the happy faces and happy moments I saw in WYD2011. Plus, learning how to draw these flags was a bit of a challenge for me, but a good one it was!

For those of you who have no idea what World Youth Day is, it's a gathering of vibrant young faithful from all over the world, either bi-annually or tri-annually. It's a walk of faith, where you and your friends brave the odds together as you meditate and try to live the life of Christ more. The last WYD was in Madrid in 2011, and close to 2 MILLION young people were there. They knew what there were living, and they were just so happy. Even I drew joy from that day. Meeting Pope Benedict XVI was awesome, but each of us — and I mean each of us had an individual lesson to draw from World Youth Day. It's as if Christ was speaking to all 2 million of us.

Drawn on white A4 card.
Sharpie markers and coloured gel pens.
Touching up done on Photoshop CS 5.1.

© Annette 'Troisnyx' Singh, 2012.

P.S. Here's a challenge: Try and spot all the flags that have made it into the drawing... even the ones that have been obscured.

Oh? You're from the country with one of the biggest contingents. I've heard vocal Italians clapping and cheering wherever I've been

How'd you find it?

Excellent! I really like the pope! I see you are from United Kingdom, and that makes me really happy. Yesterday I took part to a conference on John Henry Newman and I'm happy the Church is so active there!
Blessed be you, the pope, and everyone.

God bless you too! And God bless the Pope!

The Church here is alive, and I am glad. Yes, humanists and our separated brethren can say all they want to say about us Catholics, but nothing is going to take away the fact that Britain has had Catholic roots, and neither is anything going to take away the fact that those who do come to church actually know what they're talking about.

By the way, Blessed John Henry Newman is one of the Beati whom I regularly invoke for help.

Absolutely: England, Scottland, Ireland, all of them have Catholic presences since almost two thousands years. The greatest enemy of our time, I think, is not the struggle or accusations with other churches, but to defende our faith against the ones you called humanists. In fact our pope is always the main objective of their attacks, in that sense I'm really glad his visit to U.K. was such a success.

And we need to take it further. Marriage is under threat in England and Wales, and Scotland is considering secession from the UK partly because of this. ROI seceded primarily for different reasons, but I don't think the Irish would've done it the way England and Wales did.

......There needs to be a revival of faith. Heavily.

I did know nothing about this threat, I do know Scotland searching for secession, but I didn't think it was because of this, nor it was such a serious eventuality. I think England was and still is a foot forward the other European nations and it's not something I usually like to admit, I'm honest: in discoveries, new philosophy, political ideas, economical theories...Other countries usually follow what England's people and society experiment first; in that way revival of faith in England would be useful to us all too, because it remarks our origins.

Indeed. Kaleb H (~alcuin18 ) has told me that he admires Britain a lot. I do too, with all my heart, and it'd bring me great joy to see the Catholic faith make a full comeback to Britain. I do have confidence that, if we on this end turn to God, we can stay strong and bounce back. Reason I say this is because in the past, there were moral and religious conflicts that could've knocked us off the edge (the Reformation, the whole school of supposed new thought), but we've always recovered from those stormy periods (the Restoration, the Catholic Emancipation Act, and to an extent, the morality insisted upon in the Victorian period).

Scotland has quite a sizeable Catholic proportion, whilst Ireland is predominantly Catholic (or at least supposed to be).

It's going to be in a book! About World Youth Day! Only thing is, I'm not sure if it'll end inside or on the book. Regardless, the authors have said that it's going in!

Dude, I've tried nearly everything except lontong and a few others. I grew up actually asking for murtabak or satay kajang with peanut sauce for whenever my dad came back from work. Our weekends were hawker weekends. I remember them too well.

Reason why I threw Canada in with a huge flag was because next to the Americans, the Canadians were the second largest English-speaking group of pilgrims in Madrid. Yes, even they showed up in greater numbers than us Britons.
