Description
White china marker and Prismacolor pencils on black textured paper - 16" x 20"This is my illustration to repeal "Don't Ask Don't Tell." I came up with the concept and stuff months before the vote, and funny that it was repealed right when I was starting to work on this.
So far this piece has won Gold Key for 2011 Scholastic Art and received an American Vision Nominee.

I'm not expressly against people in the military talking about what they do in their sex life (I personally don't care nor want to know), but people in the active military aren't there to have sex with everyone. They are there to defend freedom.
I also dislike that you associated homosexuality with the rainbow, but that's a whole 'nother debate in itself.

What would you choose to represent homosexuality visually other than the 6-color rainbow then?

I don't know. The rainbow isn't owned by LGBT fans nor does the rainbow have anything to do with that. I really don't care what the symbol is, as long as it doesn't already have a meaning (like the rainbow) and actually has some correlation to it.

Haha, the rainbow isn't owned by anyone, the reason it becomes a representation for homosexuality is because the rainbow flag was used in the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade in 1978 and was inspired by the Flag of Human Race, which represented World Peace. It has a lot of history and each color has a specific meaning, starting with 8 colors and reduced to 6 over time. As an illustrator, I don't see any problem with choosing a visual element to represent what I say that everyone recognizes and understands right away and that it is historically relevant to the subject matter.
You can always use your argument for anything actually, like the USA doesn't own stripes or stars but that's what on their flag, or why a dove represents world peace, etc... Sometimes symbols have relevant visual connection with its idea, sometimes they just become iconic symbols because of the historic movements, sometimes it's just a common thing among the general public. That's all.

That actually didn't further your point, if you were trying to make a rebuttal. Merely stating the time and place where the LGBT club decided to start using the rainbow does not present a reason why the rainbow could be used.
I'm not against your right to use the rainbow to represent homosexuality. I'm only saying using the rainbow to represent homosexuality is both a laughable and inane thing. It's like using the American flag to represent communism. XD Then again, with the way this presidency is headed, communism doesn't seem like such a far-fetched possibility anymore. It's a shame, the world we live in.

I feel nothing but love and adoration for this image... it's a wonderful concept and brilliantly executed. It's a bit of a shame about the watermark but of course I can understand your reason for adding that on, and it doesn't take away from the idea after all. Great work.
