Description
This is the Well World from the Jack L. Chalker(1944-2005) sci-fi novel series Well of Souls(or The Saga of the Well World). It is one of my favorite novel series...es. The Well World is a planet/computer that is home to 1560 different biospheres in hexagonal shapes separated into the Southern Hemisphere(for carbon-based lifeforms) and the Northern Hemisphere(for silicon-based lifeforms and others). They are separated by a giant, impassable wall several kilometers high. At the poles of the Well World are the Nothern and Southern "Zones" where Ambassadors from all hexes meet, new arrivals to the Well World are processed to become a denizen of the well world and more.
